LSU Fall Practice Report #2: John Emery Jr. is Back With The Team

As indicated yesterday by Brian Kelly, John Emery Jr. made his return back to the football field today after finishing his internship. Emery looked good and showed some good change of direction on his cuts considering that he has not been practicing with the team since the end of last year. The talented former five star running back from Destrehan, Louisiana also got second reps with the team as he continues to catch up with the other running backs in the room.

With the return of Emery, that makes it eight scholarship running backs in the backfield joining seven other talented running backs in the rotation including Josh Williams, Tre Bradford, Armoni Goodwin, Noah Cain, Trey Holly, and Kaleb Jackson, who has stood out physically at close to 230 pounds. Coach Kelly stated yesterday that he not only likes the depth, but he likes the talent of the running back room putting it up there with some of the better ones that he has been around in the past stating that this is as deep and talented as any running back room that he has ever coached.

“This is as complete and as deep as any running back room that I ever coached.”

Besides the news of Emery rejoining the team, there was nothing too much to report as the media was only allowed access to 15 minutes of the practice indoors today.

At the beginning of the period, the offense worked on going up-tempo and we got to see the first team and second team offense worked.

The first team offense had Jayden Daniels at quarterback with the same offensive line rotation as yesterday. The three wide receivers that got reps with the first team were Malik Nabers, Brian Thomas Jr., and Kyren Lacy. Jackson McGohan and Tre Bradford got in the thick of it too by getting reps with the first team at tight end and running back.

The second team offense got a lot of reps with Garrett Nussmeier at quarterback, Emery and Armoni Goodwin at running back, Aaron Anderson , Chris Hilton Jr., Landon Ibieta, and Jalen Brown at wide receiver, Ka’Morreun Pimpton at tight end, Kimo Makane’ole at left tackle, Maryland transfer Mason Lunsford at left guard, Marlon Martinez at center, Bo Bordelon at right guard, and Lance Heard at right tackle.

Defensively, all the positions were working with their position groups throughout the 15 minutes that we had available.
