HAMMOND, La. – After his performance in Southeastern Louisiana University’s narrow 45-42 loss at FBS foe Louisiana Tech, SLU punter Austin Dunlap was named the Southland Conference Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday.
Dunlap, a Slidell, Louisiana native, earned the first weekly honor of his Lion career. He is the third Lion to earn weekly honors this spring, as quarterback Cole Kelley and Ferlando Jordan were honored by the Southland on Sept. 6.
With the SLU offense accumulating 598 total yards and 32 first downs, Dunlap didn’t have many punting opportunities, but averaged 50.5 yards per punt on Saturday. He also broke loose for a 15-yard run on a fake punt on fourth-and-13, extending a drive that eventually ended in a Southeastern touchdown.
Dunlap is one of 20 candidates for the FCS Punter of the Year Award. His 41.1 career punting average is seventh in program history.
On Saturday, SLU travels to Central Connecticut State for an 11 a.m. (CDT) contest – the team’s third of five straight road games to open the season. The Lions’ nonconference finale will be streamed on www.ccsubluedevils.com and can also be heard in the Hammond area on Kajun 107.1 FM, Tangi 96.5 FM and WFPR 1400 AM, as well as online at kajun107.net and tangiradio.net.
