Diamond in the Rough: Tyrell Raby

Tyrell Raby is one of the top rated defensive backs in the state of Louisiana. The 2021 recruit plays for Madison Prep in Baton Rouge, Louisiana where he has enjoyed success on both sides on the ball. Raby played receiver in a dominant passing attack that saw its quarterback throw for well over 4,000 yards on the season. One of the most prolific receiving corps in recent memory, Raby will be back at in the 2020 season.  The 6’1 180 pound athlete has track speed, clocking an impressive 4.53 forty. Look for that number to improve as the start of fall camp gets closer. Tyrell tells me he has a 215 pound bench, and a 375 pound squat. As of this writing he is currently committed to the University of Memphis.

When did you start playing football, what age?

I started playing football when I was seven. It was for BREC in Baton Rouge.

Did you play any other sports growing up?

I played basketball, and I ran track. In basketball I played small forward and power forward. Running track when I was younger I did the 200 and the 400. I’m still running track and do the 200 and 400.

Going back to your BREC days, were you always a DB and receiver or did you play any other positions?

No, actually growing up I used to play running back. I started playing safety when I was like eleven or twelve, because I was always the tallest person on the field. So my coaches moved me to safety so I could control the field. They put me over the top because I could see the whole field and I wasn’t afraid to tackle anybody.

Going into last season, what were your top three goals?

I wanted to make All-District on both sides of the ball, All-District receiver and DB. Another one of my goals was to reach a state championship, but we fell short of that. Also, our offense, like my quarterback and our receivers we lead the state in yards.

Going forward into this season, what goals have you set for yourself?

Win a state championship, stay healthy and get ready for college, and make All-State on both sides of the ball, offense and defense.

Who are some of your biggest influences?

My mom and my dad. They go to work every day to make sure me and siblings are straight. So I feel like I have to give back to them in some way, and show how much I appreciate them.

Who would you say your favorite NFL player is?

Darius Slay, on the defensive side Darius Slay. As far as a receiver, Julio Jones. Darius Slay because he’s just lockdown. I like the grind that he brings to the game. Julio Jones, he’s just a monster, all around.

What are your expectations in the near future with so many recent commits from Louisiana going to Memphis?

Really win championships, win games, have fun. We are going to bring that Louisiana swag up there, and like I said win games and have fun. Build relationships, have the best college experience I can and get a degree. Absolutely get a degree.

Speaking of Louisiana swag, how are you going to show your Memphis teammates that Louisiana has the best athletes in the country when it comes to football?

Every Louisiana player I know that has left the state and gone somewhere you hear about them. I don’t know how to explain it, we just got that dog in us. We can’t be beaten. We just have that dog mentality, we play with an attitude. I don’t know we just have that swag with us.

Speaking of can’t be beaten, on a scale of 1-10 what would your ideal game day performance number be?

A 10, for sure. I’m an every game day player. I wake up in the morning, fix my protein, and drink my protein. On the way to school I listen to Young Boy, like my game day music I gotta listen to Young Boy all day. It hypes me up. Then in pregame, I’ll be relaxing ready to go, so I say a ten. I’ll just be ready to go.

So what motivates you the most?

My parents, because they get every morning, early early. Like my mom she gets up at like four o’clock in the morning, even during this corona (virus) and she gets off at like seven thirty at night. She doesn’t fuss about it, she does deals with it, because she knows she has to make sure we are straight. She works hard to make sure everybody in my family is straight.

At the end of this year, what would you want your coaches and teammates to say about you?

How much of a leader I am, I am humble. I am an all-around good person and player.

If you weren’t playing football, what sport do you think you would be playing?

Basketball, I love basketball. But at my school, it is like a powerhouse in basketball. At my school they take basketball super serious, and I feel like I couldn’t give my focus, give my all, to both. I couldn’t take basketball super serious or take football super serious, because when basketball is working out I need to be working out with football. And, football is my main sport, and I don’t want to mess around and get hurt playing basketball when I’m doing track or football, and I could be bettering myself when football season comes.
