Diamond in the Rough: Jaquan Dorsey

Jaquan Dorsey is the starting quarterback for Landry Walker High School. He is a very quick and efficient quarterback. Jaquan believes that his talent speaks for itself every time he steps onto the football field. He is a natural born leader on and off the field, that is a talent that can not be taught. His personal goal for this season is to have 30 touchdowns before it is over, and by over I mean in December in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome with a championship ring on his finger.

How old were you when you started playing football?

I was 11 years old when I started playing football, and I played for Pontchartrain Park. I played running back, safety and wide receiver. I did not play quarterback until I was in the 8th grade when I was playing flag football. My coaches realized I was a natural at it, and ever since then I have been perfecting my craft at being a quarterback.

What has being a quarterback taught you about yourself?

It has taught me a lot about being a leader, to be very vocal, even enhance my communication skills. It has also taught me to become a even better team player to my teammates, and how not to be selfish.

How do you think football has had an overall influence on your life?

Before football I was a very active kid, always getting into things. My mother put me into park ball, then I realized I liked doing this and I fell in love with it. Also, by my dad being a great wide receiver at Warren Easton High School who was was a well rounded football player also plays a part in how football has influenced my life. All my life knowing that, made me even more determined to be the best I could be.

What is one thing that sets you apart from everybody else?

I feel like I want it more than everybody out there, and that I can not be beat. I am always looking for ways to amp my team up to make them as hungry as I am for the win.

Why do you consider Cam Newton to be your inspiration?

I used to watch him at Auburn, and I have always wanted to be like him. I feel like I act like him and talk like him. I admire his confidence, his swag and I model after that. Watching him rise to the top, seeing myself in him, and believing in my talents along with hard work and determination is the reason I am number 1. I feel like superman when I am out on the field.

If I were to go to your high school and ask any one of your teachers who is Jaquan Dorsey, what would their response be in your opinion?

They would say that I am a charming, and lovable young man. I do not get into any trouble in school, they would say I stay out of trouble and I am a respectable young man. Also, that I am an A student.

How do you expect the season for your team and yourself to go this season?

I expect us to go to the superdome this year, but everybody can say that. You have to grind day by day, week by week, you have to take it one day at a time and everything will fall in place.

If you had to think of one word to describe yourself in a nutshell, what would that word be?

I would have to say I am very humble, because I rather be playing the game of football then to be in the media or in the “hype”. Humble over hype is what I have always believed in, your action on the field speaks volume for itself.
