Diamond In The Rough: Edward Gilds III

Edward Gilds is a 6’0″ defensive back out of St. Augustine High School in New Orleans, Louisiana. He weighs 185 pounds and is in the class of of 2021. Gilds is a 4 star and is rated at a 7.5. Gilds is a very physical and aggressive athlete who takes pride in playing smart. He’s an intelligent defender with good ball skills and closing speed. He also has excellent cover skills can easily break away to make a big tackle. In the 2019 season, he lead his team in interceptions. Gilds has a 3.5 GPA and is also apart of the Track & Field team at St. Augustine High School.

At what age did you begin playing football and what motivated you to play this sport?

I started playing football before I could even remember! I started as a small child, around three years old. I played in the neighborhood. My dad was my motivation as he loved the sport and I always saw him watch it on tv. That made me want to play, so I started playing park ball when I was five years old.

You run the 400 in Track. How do you feel like that helps you the most on the football field?

It helps me with my endurance. The 400 is not the easiest race in track. When I transfer that over to football, it helps me perform better during a drive. I last longer in the game.

What’s your favorite thing about your position?

My favorite thing about my position is catching interceptions and making big hits. That really excites me.

How do you think coaches and teammates would describe you?

They would describe me as a hardworking young man.

What are some goals you have for this season?

This season I want to be better than the last. I want to get more interceptions than last year. I also want to get more tackles, and lead my team in both interceptions and tackles.

What has football taught you about yourself or life?

It taught me that there will always be obstacles, but it’s about how you take on the obstacles.

What’s your favorite thing about playing football in Louisiana?

My favorite thing is the intensity. It’s a big football state, so everybody brings their all every game.

What would you tell younger players who want to play high school football one day?

I would tell them to keep working hard, with hard work you can do anything.

What would you say are some of your strengths?

I can read formations, I know offenses do before they do it. I am a very physical player who can cover well.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I see myself in the NFL draft in five years.

Three words to describe yourself?

Tough, hardworking, and passionate.

How do you prepare for an upcoming game?

I drink a Pedialyte before every game to get my electrolytes and I listed to NBA Youngboy.

What is one thing you can’t go a day without?

I can not go a day without football!

If you could vacation anywhere in the world right now, where would you pick?

Right now, I would go to Los Angeles, California!

Have you thought about what you’d like to study in college?

I want to go into some form of Engineering.
