An undefeated Catholic team came ventured into Geismar tonight to take on an 8-1 Dutchtown. Given the record of the Griffins and the way they seem to have scored at will on opponents, while also keeping them out of the end zone, I was shocked at the outcome of this game. However, on a cold autumn night in early November the Catholic Bears would put up 70 points on the Griffins and nearly 800 yards of total offense. 768 total yards to be exact, and a new state record for total offense.
If you’ve been following the Bears this season the way they score should come as no surprise though, head coach Gabe Fertitta says “we’ve had 20 different people score touchdowns this year, and I think that just shows how hard our kids work, and also that’s a credit to the coaches who get those kids ready.”
Senior running back Josh Parker had 169 yards on the ground and two touchdowns. The big offensive line for the Bears helped in the passing game as well. Brian Hibbard, Joseph Alexander, Thomas Beale, and new comer Emery Jones all played excellent on the Catholic line. Connor Finucane, who plays on both sides of the ball was incredible tonight. “Connor is an absolutely dominant football player” Fertitta says “it is a little bit baffling to me that more schools have not come onto him.” They gave senior quarterback Jackson Thomas all the time to throw tonight as well. As he threw for 326 yards and four touchdowns tonight.
The Bears showed tonight that they have the ability to be a dynamic offense tonight, if they need to throw the ball, they can throw it. If they need to run it, they have the stable of running backs to run the ball. Josh Parker and Brealen Morgan got the lion share of touches tonight for the Bears, but waiting in the wings is George Hart III. The junior running back had 49 yards on eight carries and two touchdowns tonight for the Bears.
Dutchtown sophomore running back Dylan Sampson had a huge night for the Griffs, putting points on the board with an 85 yard punt return for a touchdown late in the first half. This young man definitely has a bright future in front of him, and could help lead the Griffins to a deep run in the playoffs this season.
