Catholic advances past Rummel in late thriller

Check out these highlights

The Catholic Bears were able to win a low-scoring, round 3 playoff game against Archbishop Rummel. This 14-7 victory now advances them to the 4th round, where they will play Edna Karr in New Orleans.

Tonight’s game was a low-scoring as it was two high level teams going at it. This game was likely affected by the weather as well, as both teams became very run dependent. That said, the first half, there were no points scored as both defenses continued to go back and forth with crucial and big stops. The first team to get on the board were Catholic, late in the 3rd. This came from a TD reception from Jayson Duncan.

The next points weren’t until late in the 4th, when Rummel was able to capitalize and score their first points of the game with a TD reception from Micah Green off of a trick play. However, the next drive, Catholic were able to put the dagger in the game with a huge TD from Amari Clayton off of a trick play of their own. This final TD proved to be too much for Rummel as the Bears defense were able to hang on to that lead.

Most of the key players from both sides in tonight’s game were showing up on the defense. The CB duo of Cayden Jones and Jacob Bradford were able to both get crucial interceptions for their team’s during key moments to halt Rummel’s drives. Amari Clayton and Jayson Duncan were able to score the team’s two TDs as well. As for Rummel, Mitchell Harris had a huge interception that his team were able to capitalize and score off of.

After the game, I was able to talk to Coach Fuller

“One, they’re a good football team. So, we kind of expected it to be back and forth game where the margin of error would be very small, they felt that through the whole game and every play, they’re gonna have a big impact on it. Really proud of our players just staying focused, being able to focus on what they control through the course the game, playing with great effort, and sticking together.”

Coach Fuller when asked what did he learn from last year going into this year

“I mean we’ve been aggressive in every big game this year, and there was an opportunity to either try to just get the first down or be aggressive, like we were. We wanted to try to stick to what what has got us here in that moment.”

Coach Fuller when asked about his game sealing trick play
