This past Sunday, the LSU community received shocking news that star wide receiver Kyren Lacy passed away from a self inflicted gunshot wound in Houston. This came a day before a grand jury was expected to hear evidence on a December car crash that claimed the life of a 78 year old Marine in which Lacy left the scene.
Throughout the last couple of days, everybody that knew Kyren has been sending in countless number of emotional tributes to the former Tigers pass catcher from Thibodaux, Louisiana including his former coach Brian Kelly, who talked about Kyren today in front of the media.
“Kyren was a bright star. He had an incredible personality. I remember him as somebody who had a love for the game, a love for being a Tiger, and was a guy that played with great emotion. When you think of Kyren, you are going to smile for most of the time. He was a guy that was full of energy and I think a lot of his teammates will remember him that way as well.”

Lacy’s former teammates also paid tribute on social media.
Lacy had a promising football career prepping at Thibodaux High School where he was the number 10 wide receiver for the Class of 2020. He finished his senior season with 54 receptions for 864 yards and 18 touchdowns.
As a three star recruit, Lacy ended up choosing to play football for the UL Ragin’ Cajuns where he finished with 50 catches for 668 yards and 10 touchdowns in two seasons before transferring to LSU.
In three seasons with the Tigers, Lacy finished with 112 for 1,692 yards and 16 touchdowns. After being the number three receiver behind Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr., Lacy ended up being the number one receiver this past season.
Kelly mentioned how much of a positive impact Lacy had on everybody that was surrounding him, which makes this an even tougher pill to swallow. Unfortunately, for Kelly, he said that this is not the first time it has happened, and this tragic unfolding is a cautionary tale on how athletes should take their mental health seriously.
“Mental health is one of the facets of player development that you’re working with in my field. And, unfortunately, it’s happened before, and I never take a situation like this as one that could never happen. You’re always on guard for it.”
