Rising Star: ATH Carter Ready, Crowville Junior High (Winnsboro, LA)

We continue our Rising Star series with a jack of all trades from North Louisiana, Carter Ready. He played all over the field on both sides of the ball for Crowville last year, and he’ll look to continue growing in this new sport of his at Franklin Parish next year.

Carter’s actually mostly focused on baseball throughout his life to this point. It’s been his biggest passion, a game he remembers playing as long as he has been able to walk. He mainly plays center field with a little bit of pitcher thrown in as well. Despite that being his main focus for most of his life, he’s enjoyed a good amount of success in his short time playing football as well.

This is only Carter’s 2nd year playing football in pads, and he already has experience being one of the leaders of his football team. He improved greatly over his 8th grade year, where at the end, he was chosen as one of the players to come to our Junior High Bowl Game. He can play all over the field, but he’s found the most success playing defensive back. His background as a centerfielder helps give him the speed to cover opposing wide receivers, and he knows how to read the body language of his opponent to know when to jump routes and go for the ball. Carter’s football career has just begun, but we can’t wait to see where it takes him.

What got you into football in the first place? What was your first experience with it?

Around 6th grade, we would play football in the playground during recess. When 7th grade came around, I thought I’d try it out, and I ended up liking it. After all the 8th grade leaders left, I stepped up, and that’s how I got selected to the bowl game.

What’s your favorite part of playing football?

It’s just something different. I like to watch it, I like playing it, it keeps me healthy and in shape.

What are some of the differences you’ve noticed between baseball and football?

There’s a lot more running in football. There’s more physical activity – you’re getting hit, you’re hitting people. In baseball, there’ still running and being active, but it isn’t there as much.

What was your experience at the bowl game?

It was a very cool experience. I had never participated in a big event like this. Especially for a sport I’ve just gotten into and hadn’t played for very long, it was really important to me to go out there and try my best. I got to play a little bit, and getting out there was cool. I made new friends and learned new things about the sport.

Is there a particular game you’ve played that you enjoyed the most? What stood out about it?

The Mangham game. They are a big rival, and we’ve been beaten by them for many years. We came back this season and beat them this year.

You play multiple positions. What’s your favorite position to play and why?

DB. I get the most action at defensive back. I’ve played middle linebacker before, wide receiver, defensive tackle.

What is your biggest strength on the field?

I’m kind of fast. Instead of turning around and seeing when the ball is thrown, I can see it in their eyes. Their eyes widen when the ball is coming at them, and that’s big to decide when to turn around and block it or intercepted.

Is there an NFL or college player that you take inspiration from for your own game?

I like Alvin Kamara and DeVonta Smith. I just admire their athletic abilities – it’s crazy that a human can do that on the football field.

What do you want to improve on the most going into High School?

Agility. I want to get more agile and get faster feet.

What teams do you root for when you are watching football?

I’m a 49ers fan. I became one last year, I like Christian McCaffrey a lot.

What hobbies or interesting facts do you have about yourself?

For a long time, I’ve had what my mother called “growing pains”. It’s called Osgood-Schlatter disease. Any contact to certain areas in the knees is very painful. You’re supposed to get tackled in the knees in football. Me having that and not feeling it because of adrenaline.

What general goals do you have for high school?

I want good grades. I’m an academic weapon, my favorite subject is history. I can recite everything from history class, all the way back to Mesopotamia.

What do you want to do after your playing days are over?

Engineering.

Why should fans keep their eye on you, Carter Ready, as a Rising Star in Louisiana High School Football?

My background makes me a unique football player.
