One of the top programs in the state of Louisiana, the Zachary Broncos, put on a show for their dedicated fans at home, who showed up despite the rainy forecast for the first Friday night of the season. The players and coaching staff gave the fans, students, and band much to celebrate putting up almost 50 points in their convincing win.
They started with the ball after Plaquemine deferred to the second half and RB Nate James didn’t take long before he broke away and scored on the first drive of the game.
This was a competitive week 1 matchup on the schedule and it showed shades of being that in the first quarter with both teams not allowing a score after Zachary’s initial score. After a QB fumble on the sideline on the first play of the second quarter, Broncos QB Caleb Gonzales immediately aired it out throwing the perfect pass down the sideline right into WR Trey Chaney‘s hands. He did the rest taking it into the endzone.
The fumbles throughout the game cursed Plaquemine every time they were able to start to get into a rhythm. With every mistake, Zachary’s offense was making them pay. QB Gonzales found his favorite target of the game once again, Trey Chaney, in the endzone for his second TD reception of the game.
6’3 WR Kristion Brooks had a pretty calm game but still found his way into the endzone tonight with a toe-tap catch near the pylon, that could have gone both ways for a few seconds, but the refs ruled it a catch, and the first touchdown of his junior season.
Plaquemine RB Tyrese Mosby showed his big play potential with a gashing run to set them up to score after getting the ball back with barely a minute remaining in the half. It was only right that he would be the one to end up punching it in to finally get his team on the scoreboard on a rough night.
RB DaVekio Ruffin left his mark on the game with an amazing highlight and put in his second touchdown of the night on the first play of the 4th quarter. He barreled through two defenders and was able to accelerate past anyone else who had a chance at tackling him to push the lead to 42-7.
Plaquemine quarterback Nicholas Victorian had a nice find in the endzone to WR John Walker V to give the Green Devils their 2nd touchdown of the game. Unfortunately, in the blink of an eye, they were back down by 35 with Zachary WR Tra’lan Sept flying down the sideline on the kick return all the way to the house, putting the Broncos’ stamp on this game with their 7th touchdown. The clock hit zero and 49-14 Zachary over Plaquemine was the final score.
Zachary’s head coach, David Brewerton, was very pleased with the overall effort of his team in the big win over a top-ranked opponent. But like any coach who is going to lead his team to be successful, he also saw some things that he wants to improve on next week.
I was very pleased with the defense’s effort. I thought we played really well, we gave up one bad drive at the end of the first half but very pleased with the way Coach Zito and his staff prepared our guys for this week.

I thoguht we came out kind of lethargic in the second half on offense, but that’s come along. There are a lot of new people out there man and we’re trying to gel as much as we can.

Looking forward to Zachary’s schedule for the rest of their season, they have a long journey placed ahead of them. Going head-to-head with many of the state and district’s top teams they will have a chance to prove themselves and show that they deserve their current top-10 ranking in the state of Louisiana.
Next week, Acadian. Following week, Carencro. Following week, Opelousas. I mean every week is a top 10 matchup, they are all going to be a lot fun.
