The five finalists were announced for AP NFL Rookie of the Year and three of those finalists played for the Purple and Gold of LSU in Washington Commanders QB Jayden Daniels, New York Giants WR Malik Nabers, and Jacksonville Jaguars WR Brian Thomas Jr.
The LSU trio will also join Las Vegas Raiders TE Brock Bowers and Denver Broncos QB Bo Nix as other finalists for Rookie of the Year.
The favorite for the award is LSU’s third ever Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels, who is having a spectacular rookie season with 3,568 passing yards this season. He also rushed for 891 yards and totaled 31 touchdowns (25 passing, 6 rushing) during his rookie campaign. What is most impressive has been his poise throughout the playoffs leading the Commanders to playoff wins over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Philadelphia Eagles. Now, with Daniels leading the way, the Commanders are one more win away from reaching the Super Bowl.
Daniels’ two top receivers at LSU are also coming off impressive performances for their respective teams this season. Although both the New York Giants and Jacksonville Jaguars had underwhelming seasons, both Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas were bright spots individually.
Nabers was the Giants’ top offensive weapon with 109 catches for 1,204 yards and 7 touchdowns while Thomas had 87 receptions for 1,284 yards and 10 touchdowns.
The winner will be announced on February 6th during NFL Honors.
