HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana senior linebacker Sione Teuhema and sophomore kick returner Juwan Petit-Frere represented the Lions on the 2017 STATS FCS All-America Teams, which were released on Tuesday.
Teuhema and Petit-Frere were both named first team selections, adding to their first team nods on the Phil Steele FCS All-America Teams that were announced last week. Southeastern was one of five schools to place multiple players on the first team, along with No. 1 James Madison, No. 2 Jacksonville State, No. 4 North Dakota State and No. 5 Sam Houston State.
The Lion honorees join former Lions Robert Alford (2012) and Xavier Roberson (2013) as the only players to earn first team All-America honors from STATS (formerly the Sports Network).
Teuhema and Petit-Frere were among 15 Southland Conference players, as the league finished second in the nation in number of selections, just behind the Missouri Valley Conference’s 17 representatives. The Lions’ league rival, Sam Houston State, led the nation with five selections, while other Southland members Central Arkansas (four), SLU (two), UIW (two), Nicholls (one) and Houston Baptist (one) were also represented.
A first team All-Southland Conference selection, Teuhema finished 11th in the Buck Buchanan Award voting after posting 80 tackles, nine sacks and 19.0 tackles for loss in his final collegiate campaign. The Keller, Texas native’s tackle for loss total tied a single-season school record. Teuhema currently ranks in the top five in FCS in sacks (4th) and tackles for loss (1st) per game.
Petit-Frere was named second team all-conference following the regular season. He led the nation with a 34.6 kickoff return average. The Orlando, Florida native also had two touchdowns and sat atop the FCS national rankings in kickoff return average from the opening week of the season to present day.
In the history of the Southland Conference, only Roberson’s 2013 kickoff return average of 35.2 ranks higher in the league’s kickoff return single-season average rankings than Petit-Frere’s tally in his debut season in Hammond.
Teuhema will look to continue his career on the professional level, while Petit-Frere will return for his junior season, which will open on Sept. 1 at ULM.
