In its first live action scrimmage Thursday night East Ascension showed it has big play ability all over on offense. Senior quarterback Cameron Jones looked steady throughout the night, making plays through the air, and with his feet when the pocket collapsed. An interception thrown late in the game, looked to seal the victory for Central. However, the defense of the Spartans held, and senior wide receiver Steven McBride had an amazing 50/50 grab in the end zone that “tied” the game up when East Ascension and the Wildcats went into the “live” period of the scrimmage with just 25 seconds left on the clock.
Senior quarterback Hobert Grayson, who has not played football since the sixth grade, can be serviceable in the back-up quarterback role or as a wide receiver as well. The 6’4 athlete makes the move back over to football after a hiatus with the school’s basketball team. Grayson, looked very agile Thursday night, and had a big run against the Wildcats to setup first and goal for the Spartans.
East Ascension junior wide receiver Navell Chopin had a 75 yard catch and run for a touchdown on the first possession during the “live” period. The 6’3 receiver will be a big target for Jones in the Spartans air attack. Sophomore running back Kendall Washington had three touchdowns on the night before the two teams went to the live period. Senior running back Ethan Bagwell had several long runs as well. Coach Lee states that “Kendall is the strongest running back I’ve ever been around. I think that Kendall (Washington) and (Ethan) Bagwell will be our 1-2 punch this year.”
Central’s senior quarterback Samuel Kenerson had moves that rivaled that of Kyler Murray. He looked very comfortable in the pocket and then when things broke down, he was able to use his 4.38 speed to escape pressure and make plays with his feet. Kenerson will definitely be giving defensive coordinators headaches this season with his playmaking ability.
The Spartans had matchup advantages in size, and speed against the Wildcats on both sides of the ball. However, the Wildcats did not back down and continued the fight. Something that is what Louisiana Football is all about.
