The Alcorn State Braves (4-1) traveled to Baton Rouge, Louisiana to face the Southern University Jaguars (2-3) in their homecoming matchup at A.W. Mumford Stadium Saturday evening. A rainy slow start for both teams’ offense had several stand out moments for the Jags. An early interception for the Jags by senior defensive back Demerio Houston gave them an opportunity to score. Despite all efforts, the Jags were foiled on their attempts to score a touchdown by the strength of the Braves’ defense.

The Jags struggled to pick up their momentum going into the third quarter. The Southern offense was outdone in the third quarter having only 49 offensive plays, none of which they were able to score from. Unfortunately, the Jaguars were not able to recover in the fourth quarter. Sophomore quarterback John Lampley tried to spark some energy for the team but was unable to connect to either standout receivers Devon Benn nor Kendall Catalon for a touchdown. This will be the first time the Jaguars have not scored a touchdown in their homecoming game in decades.

The Southern University Jaguars will go into their next matchup after their bye week, in Prarie View Texas against the Prarie View A&M Panthers in Blackshear Field.
