The Jaguars were handed a disappointing loss Saturday by the hands of the Northwestern State Demons. The Demons came out firing Saturday taking all of the wind out of the Jaguars fan base quickly jumping to a 17-0 lead in the first quarter. Southern was able to respond with seconds left in the first giving them a 10 point deficit leading into the 2nd quarter. Shortly thereafter, Northwestern State was able to score another 17 points in a quarter giving the Demons a 34-7 lead at the half. Southern quarterback Austin Howard was replaced by Freshman Deonte Shorts. Howard finished the night throwing one interception less than he had completions. (4 of 14 for 97 yards, 1 TD and 3 INTs). Shorts is a freshman from Baton Rouge that has attracted a lot of positive attention during Southern’s preseason. It looks as though Shorts will have his opportunity to lead the Jaguars after being much more efficient than his predecessor (13 of 21 for 159 with 1 TD and 0 INTs). Southern showed grit and determination as they score 20 points in the second half in an attempt to tighten the box score. Final score being 51-27 in favor of the Demons. Southern looks to have a competition at the quarterback position at the conclusion of the weekend. Southern falls to 1 and 2 on the season with a chance to redeem themselves next Saturday against Prairie View A&M.
