SLU Offense Shines in First Spring Scrimmage

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana offense had the upper hand as the Lion football team closed out the second week of spring camp with its first scrimmage Saturday morning in Strawberry Stadium.

Quarterbacks Donovan Isom, Lorenzo Nunez and Chandler Eiland directed Southeastern on 12 scoring drives. Nunez, a transfer from South Carolina, threw a 32-yard touchdown pass to freshman Azende Magee and also scored on a seven-yard scamper.

Eiland, a sophomore, connected with freshman Austin Mitchell on a 95-yard scoring pass. Junior running backs Eugene Bethea and Darren Johnson both had two rushing touchdowns while senior Darius Durall juked through the Lion defense for another 42-yard score.

Senior Dillon Burkhard connected on field goals of 29, 41 and 45 yards, while junior Jonathan Tatum made ones of 29 and 30 yards. The defense got on the board on a 10-yard interception return by sophomore Tre’ Spann of an Isom pass.

“It was good,” Southeastern head coach Ron Roberts said of the first scrimmage. “I thought it was physical and that they played hard. I’m pretty pleased with it. We’ll watch some film and see what it looks like. I thought the offense executed really well and made some big plays. Our running backs made some big plays in space, making them miss.”

Southeastern continues spring camp this week with practices at 4:30 p.m. both Tuesday and Thursday. The Lions will hold their second scrimmage next Saturday at 10 a.m. in Strawberry Stadium. The annual Spring Game is scheduled as part of Super Lion Saturday on April 1 at 2 p.m.

“We’re trying to find out those guys we can count on,” Roberts said of the plans for the remainder of the spring. “It’s about execution and how hard they can do it. I really want to get in there and get a really good film evaluation of the quarterback situation and see where we are there and make some improvements next week.”
