Seven LSU Tigers Named To 2022 Preseason Awards Watch Lists

This is preview magazine season, which is the time of the year that every national media member gives out their top teams and their top players. It is also the time for all the major national awards put out their preseason award watch lists. The players that make the lists are the names to watch out for and the ones most likely to receive a trophy at the Home Depot College Football Awards on December 8th this year. For each position, there is a trophy that will represent the best of the best in all of college football.

Being one of the top programs in all of college football, the LSU Tigers are used to having a lot of names not only on award watch lists, but also holding those trophies at the end of the season. In fact, arguably the greatest college football team of all time, which was the 2019 LSU Tigers brought home 19 awards that season alone including legendary quarterback Joe Burrow, who won nine of those trophies including the Heisman Trophy. Entering the 2022 season, seven Tigers were represented on all the preseason award watch lists including a couple of players represented for more than one award. Throughout the season, make sure to follow these Tigers in their quest to hold some hardware in the end.

Maxwell Award Watchlist: WR Kayshon Boutte

LSU wide receiver Kayshon Boutte is on the Maxwell Award watchlist. The Maxwell Award is given to the best player in college football and is named after Robert “Tiny” Maxwell, who was a Swarthmore College football player, coach, referee, and sportswriter. Kayshon is looking to become the second LSU Tiger to win the award joining Joe Burrow, who won the award in 2019.

Biletnikoff Award Watchlist: WR Kayshon Boutte

Kayshon Boutte makes another appearance here as it is no surprise that one of the best wide receivers in all of college football is on the Biletnikoff Award watchlist. The Biletnikoff Award goes out to the best wide receiver in college football and is named after legendary Florida State and Oakland Raiders Hall of Famer Fred Biletnikoff. Kayshon is looking to become the third different LSU player to win the Biletnikoff Award joining Josh Reed in 2001 and Ja’Marr Chase in 2019.

Butkus Award Watchlist: LB Micah Baskerville

LSU linebacker Micah Baskerville is on the Butkus Award watchlist. The Butkus Award is given out to the best linebacker in all of college football and is named after legendary Illinois and Chicago Bears Hall of Famer Dick Butkus. Micah is looking to become the second LSU linebacker to win the award joining Devin White, who won the award back in 2018.

Outland Trophy Award Watchlist: DL Jaquelin Roy

LSU defensive lineman Jaquelin Roy is on the Outland Trophy Award watchlist. The Outland Trophy goes to the best interior lineman in all of college football and is named after John Outland, who was an All-American at Penn and a Hall of Fame college football coach. Jaquelin is looking to become the second LSU Tiger to win the award joining Glenn Dorsey, who won the award back in 2007.

Nagurski Trophy Watchlist: DE BJ Ojulari

LSU defensive end BJ Ojulari is on the Nagurski Award watchlist. The Nagurski Award is given to the best defensive player in college football and is named after Minnesota and Chicago Bears Hall of Famer Bronko Nagurski. BJ is looking to become the second LSU Tiger to win the award joining Glenn Dorsey, who won the award in 2007.

Ray Guy Award Watchlist: P Jay Bramblett

New LSU punter Jay Bramblett is on the Ray Guy Award watchlist. The Ray Guy Award is given to the best punter in college football and is named after former Southern Miss All-American and Oakland Raiders NFL Hall of Fame punter Ray Guy. Jay is looking to become the first LSU Tiger to ever win the award.

Wuerffel Trophy Watchlist: LB Mike Jones Jr. & DE Ali Gaye

Two LSU Tigers are on the Wuerffel Trophy watchlist in linebacker Mike Jones Jr. and defensive end Ali Gaye. The Wuerffel Trophy is given to college football’s most impactful leader in community service and is named after former Florida Gators Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel. Both players are trying to become the next LSU Tiger to win the award since Rudy Niswanger did so back in 2005.

Walter Camp Award Watchlist: WR Kayshon Boutte

For the third time, Kayshon Boutte is on a preseason national award watchlist. This time, it is the Walter Camp Award, which is also given to the best player in college football, and is named after Walter Camp, who is best known as the “Father of American Football”. Kayshon is looking to become the second player to win the award joining Joe Burrow, who won the award back in 2019.

Bednarik Award Watchlist: DE BJ Ojulari

LSU defensive end BJ Ojulari is on another trophy watchlist this time for the Bednarik Award. The Bednarik Award is given to the best defensive player in all of college football and is named after two time Penn All-American and Philadelphia Eagles NFL Hall of Fame linebacker Chuck Bednarik. BJ is looking to become the first LSU Tiger to win the award since Patrick Peterson and Tyrann Mathieu won it back to back in 2010 and 2011 respectively.
