School Spotlight: Midland Legacy High School

Midland Legacy High School is a 6A football program located in Midland, TX. The Rebels are continuing their impressive season going 8-2 in the regular season and being first in their district. They are competing for their first state championship since the three-peat in 1998, 1999, and 2000.

So far in the playoffs, they have won their first two rounds. In the Bi-District round, they played Mountwood High School and defeated them in a blowout 64-19. This was because of the huge game from Damien Johnson. Damien is the running back for the Rebels who rushed for 163 yards on twelve carries and scored three touchdowns. On the defensive side of the ball, Gilbert Hernandez was the cause of three turnovers, by intercepting three passes thrown by the Rams.

In the Area round of the playoffs, it was an extremely close match-up, going into double overtime against Trinity High School. This game was tied up 42-42 at the end of regulation. In overtime Midland’s dominant runningback, Damien Johnson, rushed in for a 25-yard touchdown run. with the PAT being good, the Rebels were now winning 49-42. The Trojans would however come back and score a touchdown of their own to tie it back up before the first overtime had expired. In the second overtime, the Trojans were the first to score on a goal-line carry but failed to have a successful two-point conversion. With less than a minute left in the second overtime, the Repels would score another 25-yard run and have a successful two-point conversion to go up two points and seal the game away. This game was also another huge game for Damien Johnson who had 350 yards on 26 carries and four rushing touchdowns.

This week Midland Legacy will be facing Martin, who is coming off of their close overtime win last week, in their regional semis matchup happening on November 25th, at 4:00 in the afternoon.

This team has been coached by Coach Clint Hartman since the beginning of 2016, having a record of 69-26 in his time there. Before coming to be the head coach of the Rebels, Coach Hartman was coaching his alma mater, East Central, where he was 17-17 as their head coach bringing them to the playoff every year he was there. Before East Central, Coach Hartman was the head coach of Clear Springs High School in League City from 2007 till 2013. During this span, he was awarded District 24-5A Coach of the Year in 2009, 2011, and 2012. He looks to continue his impressive resume with another win this weekend to continue Midland’s playoff push.

Some notable players from this Midland Legacy team are:

QB Marcos Davila – This senior quarterback is the leader and a massive part of this Rebel’s offensive attack. This year Marcos became the all-time passing yards leader in Midland Legacy football history with over 8,000 yards. This four-star is committed to playing at Purdue next season and continuing his football career.

RB/CB Damien Johnson – This explosive player has contributed to the offensive and defensive side of the ball this year. With one yard shy of 1,700 yards, Damien has been averaging over 150 rushing yards a game, and throughout the regular season has 24 rushing touchdowns to go with his name. On the defensive side, Damien has been a two-time all-district cornerback. At this point, this dual playing is not committed anywhere, but coaches should try to keep an eye out on this player for the last couple of weeks of the season.

OG Lucas Barrientes – This senior offensive guard is a big reason why these two players beforehand are doing so well. This 6’3” 280lbs guard uses his body to move defenders out of his way to create a hole for his running back. At the moment he has interests from Oklahoma State, Texas State, UNLV, and UTPB.
