Calvary Baptist Academy is a private school located in Shreveport, Louisiana. Calvary was established in 1970 and has a student body of approximately 600 students in grades K-12. Calvary Baptist Academy’s mascot is the Cavalier and the school colors are green, yellow, and white. Calvary plays in the 2A LHSAA level in District 1. Calvary has also won 3 State Championship titles. The state championships came in 2013 and 2014 as well as the most recent championship in the 2020 season. They have many notable alumni including Shea Patterson (former Ole Miss and Michigan Quarterback, now plays for the USFL New Orleans Breakers), Shun Brown (Former Arizona Wide Receiver), Eric Reed Jr. (Current Georgia Tech Cornerback), and Greedy Williams (former LSU Cornerback who now plays for the Cleveland Browns). Current Jacksonville Jaguars Head Coach Doug Pederson was also Calvary’s head coach from the years 2005-2008. Now Head Coach Rodney Guin is at the helm of the Cavaliers football team. Coach Guin has been the Head Coach since 2017 and has coached an all-time record of 55 wins and 16 losses with one State Championship.

I had the chance to speak with Coach Guin and get some more insight as to what the Cavaliers are looking like this upcoming season. I first wanted to ask Coach Guin about his core values that he believes will build a successful team.

“Hard work is one for sure, integrity is another along with just being honest with the kids and them being honest with each other. As a coach we all try to lead by example. We try to show them the values within us that we want them to have as well. We also do some team building exercises and talk about what to do in order to achieve your goals and how important decision is, things like that. Just stuff that they can use that may affect them for the rest of their life.”

With all of these values put into place, the Cavs have a very promising season to look forward too. Coach Guin harped about his excitement for this season with 18 starters returning this season and many young athletes under them. The offensive side of the ball is led by returning Quarterback Abram Wardell. Wardell threw for just over 2400 yards on 186 attempts with just 4 interceptions. Along with that he threw for 33 touchdown passes. Coach Guin also spoke on the four headed monster of receivers Aubrey Hermes, John Simon IV, Kolby Thomas, and Chris Jackson. Running backs Chaz Whitaker and James Simon are also electric players to watch out of the backfield. The returning players on the line for the Cavs are Offensive Tackles Jimmy Wright and Heath Gross as well as Center Hayden Darner who lead the way for running backs. Impact players on the defensive side of the ball include the likes of Free Safety Landon Sylvie, Cornerback Detravon Davis, Defensive Back Xavier McGlothan and Strong Safety Julius Moss. Returning starters Ethan Sands and Trey Houston hold down the edge for this stacked defensive squad.

After hearing about the highly talented players returning this season it’s easy to see why Coach Guin is so excited about this upcoming season. A roster with this much talent paired with lots of on field experience is a perfect equation for success this upcoming season for Calvary Baptist Academy.
