North Iberville grits out tough victory against Central Private in muddy game

North Iberville wins their very first Varsity game of the 2024-2025 season against Central Private in a game that was heavily impacted by the weather conditions. The North Iberville Bears were able to win 36-26 against the Central Private RedHawks to move to 1-0 on their season. This was North Iberville’s first Varsity game in 15 years.

Halftime Update from the game

This was a game that was severely affected by the constant rain, wind and muddy condition. Nonetheless, we saw North Iberville get up to a comfortable lead by halftime. This lead was gained from key contributions by Jermey Favorite, who had two first half touchdowns in crucial moments of the game ,Jaylen Mims, and Mekell Tousssaint, who each had their own first half TDs.

The Central Private Redhawks put up a tremendous effort int he 2nd half in an attempt to come back though. They managed to score 20 unanswered points in the 3rd Quarter alone as Kaleb Fontenot would not be denied in that half. They committed more to the run this half, along with many crucial flags that went against North Iberville, helped allow them back to within one score.

After this big touchdown to bring Central Private to within 8, the momentum of the game went back and forth as there were many fumbles that changed positions and flags that halted drives and big plays. However, we began to see North Iberville take control of the game in the early 4th quarter and they didn’t look back from there.

This was a game where we saw both teams commit to the run due to the weather and it was essentially a test of who could run the ball, tackle, and hold onto the ball better. There were around 10 total fumbles in this game and no passes over 10 yards were completed. An old fashion football game some would say. Regardless, a big win for the North Iberville Bears in their first Varsity game in 15 years.

I was able to interview both Coach Gast and Jermey Favorite after the game.

“The conditions were something we were definitely not used to but the thing I’m most proud about is the grit.”

Coach Josh Gast when asked how he thought his team played.

“The first half we couldn’t throw the ball, it almost got to a point where we stopped running shotgun. We relied on more two back and power football.”

Coach Gast when asked about how the weather affected the game plan

Livonia is a real good 4A team, always a solid squad with great athletes and we’ll need to put on our A-Game to compete with them.”

Coach Gast when asked about how he feels going into next week

“I think I played good, but I made a few mistakes that need to be fixed. I think the weather affected my performance tonight but I’ll be better next week. ”

Jermey Favorite when asked about how he played

Overall, this was a good outing from the Bears in their return to Varisity football, regardless of the conditions. This could be seen as an early culture setting victory and they will need high morales from this game going into next week’s game as they play the Livonia Wildcats, who are 1-1 on the season.
