LSU’s Offense Has Get Right Game in 56-10 Rout Over Southeastern

After the first couple of games when the LSU Tigers were able to lean heavily on their defense for their 3-0 start, the Tigers’ offense definitely needed a confidence boost heading into their Week 4 game against the Southeastern Lions, and they got it by a 56-10 final score.

“We had a standard of the way we want to play, and I believe we upheld that standard. There wasn’t perfection out there, but there was definitely progress, and we made the progress we were looking for. Now, we have to build on that as we go on the road against a very good Ole Miss team. The goal was to play to a standard, not the opposition. We give a lot of credit to Coach Frank Scelfo and what he has done and accomplished. With the quality of our players, it comes down to execution, and I thought we did well.”

LSU HC Brian Kelly

Garrett Nussmeier, who has been dealing with a torso injury the last couple of games, had his sharpest and most efficient game by far this season. The Tigers’ fifth year senior quarterback equaled his touchdown passes going into the game with three scoring tosses tonight. If it was not for a couple of dropped passes by Tiger receivers, Nussmeier would be nearly flawless on the stat sheet, but still finished with a respectable stat line completing 25 of 31 passes for 273 yards and the three touchdowns. Nussmeier also started the game with a rushing touchdown on a quarterback sneak.

“You look at the efficiency in which he threw the football and seeing the field. Whether they were a step behind or not, it is still recognition and feeling comfortable out there. You could notice a higher level of comfort in terms of throwing the ball as well as running the ball. Though we outmatched our opponent, it still requires the technical development that we haven’t see and now that he is healthy, he can do a lot more.”

“I think for one, it looked like we were out there having fun. We were playing football and enjoying it, and I think that’s been a big thing for us. I think that it was kind of not a lack of stress, but it just kind of releasing that stress. We got some good players and just going out there and not trying to be perfect and just play.”

After going three and out on the opening possession of the game, the Tigers’ offense scored touchdowns on the following eight drives. Ju’Juan Johnson is looking more and more comfortable at the running back position as he finished with eight carries for 43 yards and two rushing touchdowns.

“I think he sees the game very well. I believe his natural instincts took over at that position. We are very impressed with the way he played along with the catches and runs he made. He is a very good football player for us, and we knew that about him coming out of high school in terms of what he can do, and we saw a glimpse of that tonight.”

In a game against his former team where he actually started his college career as a quarterback for Southeastern, tight end Bauer Sharp ended up as the Tigers’ leading receiver with five catches for 73 yards and even scored a touchdown. Barion Brown and Zavion Thomas were also on the receiving end of Nussmeier touchdown strikes.

“The really good players affect others around them. His energy, his passion for the love of the game brings up others around him. It is nice to see him catch the football. We thought we would get the chance to get it to the tight end and certainly found him in some big situations. Obviously, starting at Southeastern Louisiana, he was one of our game day captains and he was excited to play them.”

The offensive efficiency didn’t stop when Nussmeier exited the game. Backup quarterback and Mississippi State transfer Michael Van Buren Jr. led two more touchdown drives by finishing 9/11 for 120 yards and a 27 yard touchdown pass to Kyle Parker Jr. while also adding a quarterback sneak for a touchdown too.

Defensively, Blake Baker’s squad had another dominating performance, especially from the first team defensive unit. The Tigers only gave up 30 total yards and the two first downs via penalty in the first half.

“When it happens out there on the field, it’s like you’re back in high school. When you see it click, you feel like you deserve to be out there. Those are the most wonderful moments. We all have that mindset that we’re just going to be great.”

LSU DT Jacobian Guillory

LSU’s second string defense gave up their only touchdown of the game early in the third quarter and a late fourth quarter field goal, but that would be it.

Ranked as the number three team in the country, the Tigers continue what is the best start to any season at LSU under Brian Kelly at 4-0, but the team will be tested mightily next week on the road against the Ole Miss Rebels.
