LSU’s Defense Holds Against SLU

The Tigers started the game with a quick three and out. Nick Brossette had carries of zero yards and four yards, followed by a rush attempt by quarterback Joe Burrow for three yards. The Lions took over from their own 19 yard line with 13:06 to go in the first.

On the Lions first attempt Devonte Williams was tackled for a loss by Jacob Phillips. Chason Virgil would connect on a 15 yard pass to Darren Johnson to the SLU 33 for a first down. But the SLU kept shooting themselves in the foot, having multiple penalties for illegal substitution and, illegal formation (declined), and delay of game.

LSU defensively looked stout against the Lions, allowing only 27 passing yards in the first quarter and 11 total yards of offense in total no that is not a typo. The Tigers kept the Lions to negative 16 yards rushing in the first quarter.

The Tigers were able to get their offense going though, with a passing touchdown to Ja’Marr Chase for nine yards, and a one yard rush by quarterback Joe Burrow, which made the score 14-0 in the first quarter.

In the second quarter the defense for LSU kept pitching its shut out hold the Lions to negative five yards rushing while allowing only 42 through the air. On offense the Tigers continued to add to their score with a 50 yard field goal from Cole Tracy and a long pass and catch from Joe Burrow to Stephen Sullivan before the half to make the score 24-0.

The LSU defense continued to fluster the Southeastern Quarterback Chason Virgil sacking him five times throughout three quarters or caused him to leave the pocket several more times.

In the fourth the LSU forced an interception by Greedy Williams, and returned a muffed snap from the Lions 18 yard line all the way to their own 18 yard line. They then went on a four play drive that lasted one minute and forty four seconds that ended in a touchdown run by true sophomore Clyde Edwards-Helaire. Nick Brossette had another big game carrying the ball, rushing for over 100 yards for the second straight time in so many weeks.
