LSU Spring Practice Report: Sam Leavitt Likely Done For Spring, Richard Anderson Making An Early Impact, & More

Today, the LSU Tigers return back for their third week of practice and most notably, two of the team’s biggest names were unavailable as both quarterback Sam Leavitt and linebacker Whit Weeks are still recovering from injuries.

Leavitt had pins removed from his surgically repaired foot and according to Kiffin, it is unlikely that the Arizona State transfer quarterback returns back for spring football.

Because of that, it has given opportunities for the Tigers backup quarterbacks to get a lot of reps. Landen Clark got the first team reps as the offense got six snaps of 11v11 action along with Jackson Harris, Winston Watkins, and Malik Elzy at receiver. The offense focused a lot on getting Caden Durham the football during the session. Fixing LSU’s run game from last year has been a high priority for Kiffin.

“If you can’t run the ball, you have problems as a team. It’s part of your personality. It sets up everything, not just throwing the ball and play action, but it sets your whole team up.”

A lot of uncertainly was on the offensive line. During the 11v11 session, the first team offensive line had Bo Bordelon at left guard as the only change. Jordan Seaton, Braelin Moore, Aliou Bah, and Weston Davis at their usual spots.

“A lot of new pieces there. Working well with the new coaches, but there is a lot of work to do. If we were to play right now, we would be a defensive football team. That’s what Saturday showed.”

Speaking of the defense, defensive coordinator Blake Baker was highly involved with coaching multiple positions. While Chris Kiffin was handling the linebackers, Baker bounced around spending some time with cornerbacks, safeties, and the STAR position during the 20 minutes of media availability while we were out there. Kiffin talked about the role that each of his defensive coaches have.

“Chris coaches the linebackers and I like that because it allows Blake to move around and coach everybody. I think that has gone very well.”

Up front, there are opportunities to step up and get a lot of reps due to the season ending injury for Gabriel Reliford. Getting first team reps on the interior was Deuce Geralds and Malik Blockton with Jordan Ross and Princewill Umanmielen on the edge.

“I think guys have done a good job. We’ve moved people around a little bit and today in our third down package with different rushers and things. Lamar Brown will be here, which will help too at that spot.”

While the Tigers have to wait for one five star true freshman to arrive on campus for fall camp, there is another five star defensive lineman that has emerged in spring in Edna Karr prospect Richard Anderson.

“Phenomenal prospect. This guy’s going to be a great player. It’s just a matter of time to when that happens. I love how physical he is. I love how hard he’s worked early. Again, these guys really are seniors in high school. Over time, we just have changed their enrollment for so many guys to come early. He’s doing a great job. He got a little banged up and played through it Saturday, which was good. We’re really excited about him. Well coached.”
