LSU Drops Third Straight Loss Of The Season 27-16 To Florida

The nightmare continues for this LSU football program with a third straight loss after beginning the season 6-1. The Tigers fell to the Gators in the Swamp by a final score of 27-16. It was the first win by Billy Napier over Brian Kelly in this series and it keeps the Gators’ chances alive for a bowl game at the end of the season.

The Tigers have been outscored 100-25 the last 10 quarters in their losses to Texas A&M, Alabama, and Florida. LSU did move the football accounting for 382 total yards while holding the ball for close to 42 minutes of action and 92 total plays, but the Tigers just could not find ways to convert long drives into points.

“Very disappointed. We didn’t do enough things to win this football game. We were ineffective offensively. We had too many negative plays and we couldn’t finish off drives. That in itself was a part of our problem and the explosive plays on defense. When you are playing in the SEC when there’s a razor thin margin for victory or defeat, if you don’t have a clean performance, you are going to struggle. We are struggling right now in terms of consistency.”

LSU HC Brian Kelly

Garrett Nussmeier completed 27 of 47 passes for 260 yards, but was being harassed all game long by the Florida Gators defensive front. Heading into the game, Nussmeier was only sacked six times all season, but the Florida defense sacked him seven times throughout the game and even causing the one Tigers turnover of the game on a sack fumble. It was a wild turnover as Nussmeier’s fumble was recovered by Emery Jones, but he also fumbled that ultimately resulted in a Florida recovery.

Coming back from injury was DJ Lagway and even though he did not hurt LSU through the ground game, he was effective as a passer completing 13 passes for 226 yards and the opening touchdown to Elijhah Badger, who had six grabs for 131 yards in the contest.

With the game being tied at 13 in the fourth quarter, the Gators outscored the Tigers 14 to 3 over the last 15 minutes. The Gators went out in front with a one yard touchdown run from Ja’Kobi Jackson at 20-13 and put the game on ice with a 55 yard touchdown run from Jadan Baugh to make it 27-16 after LSU settled for a field goal to pull within three.

The lone LSU score of the game came on a 28 yard touchdown pass from Nussmeier to Aaron Anderson, but throughout, the Tigers could only add three Damian Ramos’ field goals to the tally.

Durham was able to get some yards on the ground with 91 yards on 20 carries while Aaron Anderson (7 catches for 72 yards and 1 TD), Mason Taylor (6 catches for 59 yards), and Josh Williams (4 catches for 31 yards) were productive as pass catchers, but Kyren Lacy was held up with only one catch until the final drive of the game.

LSU’s defense also had multiple chances at interceptions, but failed to come down with the football. The Tigers even had an opportunity to go up by a touchdown at 17-10, but the score was called back because of an offensive pass interference call on Kyren Lacy that forced the Tigers to kick a field goal to go up 13-10.

“We can’t keep putting points off the board. We are better than that. Drives have to be converted. You just can’t keep moving the ball up and down the field and not convert it into points. They don’t give you a pat on the back just because you had the ball longer. That is making sure everybody is doing their job and that’s why I have to be more involved on what’s going on. I have to be able to help our players get through this.”

LSU HC Brian Kelly

LSU had the chances to take control of the game against Florida on the road, but could never do so. This was Florida’s first win over LSU in this rivalry since 2018.

Heading into the game, the Tigers still had a mathematical chance of making the SEC Championship game and perhaps a College Football Playoff spot, but all those went down the window with another loss.

LSU will try to finish the regular season on a better note with two home games against Vanderbilt and Oklahoma.
