Gridiron Football Top 300: Miles McVay

Miles McVay is an Offensive Tackle in the Class of 2023 for East St. Louis High School in East St. Louis, Illinois. He has incredible size for his position, standing in at 6’7” and 345 lbs., McVay will do anything to keep the defense out of his backfield. If I had to describe his playstyle in one word it would be dominance, nobody at this level stands a chance getting past him! He combines his great size with spectacular strength and bulldozes opposing defensive players downfield or to the ground. His size and strength are impressive, but his IQ and work ethic are just as great, as he is often times seen blocking downfield, blocking multiple people in a play, and always playing to the whistle. With incredible potential and 1 more years of high school football ahead of him, Miles McVay should be a player on everyone’s radar.

When did you start playing football and why? I first started playing when I was around 4-5, but that was flag football, I played contact when I was 6. My dad got me into it, he has been playing his whole life and really got me into it.

Favorite moment of your career so far? Winning state with my team last year

Do you play any sports outside of football, and if so, what do you think they add to your game? I used to play basketball, I think it kept me in shape and helped with my footwork

Do you have any pre-game rituals? Only thing I really do is wake up at 6 AM, listen to music, and get my mind on the game

Going into your Junior season, what are you looking forward to? I’m ready to prove myself, I wasn’t able to finish this season, and I want to show that I’m the #2 OT for a reason, and I want to work for that #1 spot.

Do you have a quote that you stick by? You are always able to bounce back if you put your mind to it

What do you think a college would get out of you as a player? They would get an aggressive player, someone with a high IQ, I have good technique, and a good teammate who loves to be in the film room.

What motivates you to get up and train every day? My mom and my aunt, they have been sacrificing for me for my whole life and I hope I can pay them back once I make the league

What do you think makes you a good teammate? My character and leadership, even though I’m one of the youngest people on the team, I’m one of the leaders

What do you think sets you apart from other athletes? My work ethic, my knowledge of the game, and my will to play, I just love the game

What do you think the best part of your game is? I’m an all-around player, I’m really good at picking up blitzes because of all the film I watch

Favorite part about playing on the offensive line? Protecting my QB and blocking or my RB, I’m cool with the backfield and I love seeing them succeed

I see you often pancake the guy in front of you, what are some techniques you use to do this? A quick first step, some things that make it easier is going hard every play and tiring out the opposing defender, so they don’t want to go no more

What are some advantages you think you gain with your size? A lot of strength, I don’t rely on my size because at the next level everyone is big

Do you take pride in protecting your QB? All the time, my goal every play is for the O-line to not give up a sack

What are you thinking pre-snap while on the O-line? It depends on the play
