Dutchtown Defeats Ponchatoula 6-0 in Defensive Battle

It was a defensive slugfest last Friday night between the Dutchtown Griffins and the Ponchatoula Green Wave. Both teams combined for only 123 first-half yards as both offenses had trouble moving against the opposing defenses.

It looked as if no points were going to be scored in this defensive battle until Dutchtown forced a Green Wave turnover on a fumble. Dutchtown’s offense got one sustained drive in the ball game with an 11 play, 66 yard drive that was capped off with an Ethan Aucoin quarterback sneak for the touchdown. However, that one successful offensive drive was all that head coach Guy Mistretta and the Griffins needed as they held on to the victory 6-0 over Ponchatoula.

This series has been not for the faint of heart, especially if you like a lot of offensive scoring. Last year, Ponchatoula defeated Dutchtown 10-7, and now this time around, the Griffins got themselves some revenge.

Coach Mistretta and the Griffins move on to 2-0 to start the season. The statistical leaders from the game were Aucoin, who accounted for close to 100 yards of offense, running back Gary Dukes, who finished with 55 yards rushing, and Logan Mayeux, who finished as the leading receiver with five catches for 40 yards. Tomorrow, the Griffins will try to continue their strong start to the season with a home game on Friday against Covington.

Meanwhile, the 1-1 Green Wave, led by head coach Trey Willie, will try to rebound tonight against St. Thomas Aquinas.
