Diamond In The Rough: Sharone Finister Jr.

Sharone Finister Jr, is an upcoming Junior at Ferriday High School who plays both sides of the ball as receiver and corner. Sharone is 6 ft and weights 145 lbs. He participated in February’s Louisiana Gridiron Football Elite 150 Camp at Woodlawn High School in Baton Rouge, and showed his skills in front of former NFL players and coaches. When speaking to his dad about what people needed to know about the quality of player his son is, he noted:

“He picks up on things very quickly. He mostly played defense last year. The coaches see his potential at wide receiver this since his growth spirt. He grew this year from 5’6” to 6’0”. He is supposed to start at both receiver and corner this year.”

Sharone is an explosive athlete with a 9 ft long jump and a 4 sec flat shuttle. He has good hands and decent overall speed. I graded him out as a three-star prospect for the 2022 class as a receiver. For him to improve to a higher grade for me, I want to see how he puts together all his offseason work on the field in a game.

So, Sharone, when did you start playing football? I started playing when I was 6 or 7 years old. It was flag football in Jonesville, La.

Who got you into playing football? My dad got me into playing football when I was younger. When I was in the 5th grade, I wanted to play tackle football so I went to Ferriday and started playing. I like the physicality of the game.

Who has been the biggest influence in your life? My father, he showed me how to set the example and be the best that I can be.

What have you learned about yourself while playing football? To push myself to the best and greatest potential I can achieve, and to learn from the older guys all that I can.

Speaking of overcoming adversity, tell me something you have had to overcome? I just hit a growth spurt this year, so when I was younger, I was much smaller than everyone else. So, I had to work harder than everyone else on the team. I still play with that underdog mentality, and so I still push myself harder than other people. I want to prove to myself that I am the best every day.

What have you done to prepare for this upcoming season during this shelter in place order due to the Covid-19 outbreak? Before it started, I attended the LGF Elite 150 camp in February. I also train with a trainer out of Shreveport. He comes to Ferriday and works with me to improve my footwork, route running, and receiver techniques. He has previously worked with Greedy Williams and Terrance Marshall Jr.

Ferriday 2019 State 3A Champions.

What is your favorite play? Why? My favorite play is a post because I like to play with the DB. When I get to my 7th step, and cut, the DB is expecting me to run a Jet but I make my 2-step cut and get open and leave the DB.

Why do you play receiver vs any other position? I also play corner. I have been playing corner my freshman and sophomore years. This year, after my growth spurt, I started playing receiver more. Next year, the coaches are telling me that will be playing both sides of the ball at receiver and corner.

What separates you from any other receiver across the country? What makes you unique?  My separation and how I can get open. I am a team player. I do whatever is asked of me by the coaches. I work hard off the field but train harder.

Have you set the bar high this season after winning state last year? If so, how? I want to have a 1,000-yard season and I want to win another state championship. My teammates and I, go to the field and work on our routes together. I am also training every day on my own at my house or with my trainer.

Do you play any other sports? I ran track until this year when Covid-19 took away our season. I ran the 3200 meter or the 2 mile. I made it to regionals last year.

Is there any player you try to mimic while playing football? Odell Beckham Jr, and the Honey Badger (Tyrann Mathieu). I like their style of play.  They are both smaller players who play big on the field.
