Diamond In The Rough: Demetrius Hunter

Demetrius Hunter is a 3-star offensive line prospect from West Orange High School. Demetrius is listed at 6’3′, 300 pounds and is from Orange, Texas. With the size and ability displayed on tape, Demetrius is an ideal center piece for any offensive line. That’s perfect because most of his reps were taken at the center position. If I had to compare him to any player I’ve seen, I think it would be Evan Mathis who was an absolute beast in the NFL not too long ago. I give him that comparison because Demetrius is a nasty, physical lineman who bullies defenders and often sits them on the ground. He is able to get great leverage and explodes at the point of attack, making him a defensive tackle’s nightmare. Obviously this young man is very talented, but his mind is also in the right place and he will put his body on the line and do whatever it takes to propel his teammates to new/greater heights. Luckily for his team, he is a member of the 2022 recruiting class, so he will continue to help build a mindset and playstyle expectation for younger guys to follow for his next two years at West Orange.

How long have you been playing football?

I’ve been playing as long as I can remember since I was a little kid.

What would you say is one of your biggest accomplishments you’ve had since you started playing football?

Definitely being on Varsity my freshman year, also being an all-district lineman as well as an honorable mention for All-state.

How was last season for you and the team?

We did all right. We made the fourth round of the playoffs, but I wish we could have made that state-run. It was tough taking that loss but this year we have a chance to come back and make a run and go for the championship

Any achievements or stats you want for yourself other than just the team success and trying to make it to state?

I want to be all-state and I want to be nominated as a top o-lineman in the country.

So is there anybody that you wash from my college of the pros that you try to model your game after?

I don’t have a specific favorite player or o-lineman I just try to watch anybody whose physical and fires off the ball hard, that’s what I enjoy doing so that’s who I enjoy watching.

What’s an area that you think you could improve on the most?

Getting more knockdowns, being able just fire off the ball hard, continuing to knock down bodies, getting from one guy to the next and being able to knock them down.

What kind of things do you like to do in your free time?

I just like to chill most of the time,  maybe go to the mall or something I haven’t been able to really do much since the pandemic started.

How hard was it for you to stay in shape since the beginning of the pandemic?

It wasn’t hard at all I’m going to get mine  either way it goes. I’ve continued training throughout quarantine and I’ve even gotten bigger stronger and faster. I believe quarantine has made me a better player and if I’m being honest, I think I’ve gotten more explosive and my leverage is better. I’ve even learned to get better with how violent my hands are.

Do you or have you ever played any other sports?

I powerlift and I’ve played a little bit of baseball and basketball, but I only really take powerlifting and football seriously.  I’m pretty good at powerlifting, I usually go to Regionals every year. I would have been invited this past year but Corona put a stop to those plans. Also, obviously my lineman coach is a powerlifting coach so he encouraged that I do it from the start.

How often do you think you watch film?

Honestly, going back to my free time, I probably use most of it to watch film. I honestly just like to watch film to watch it. I have always enjoyed watching myself and being able to see the areas I need to improve on first hand because I enjoy critiquing myself, but also obviously I enjoy getting to watch the opponent and scout them the week before the game so I can see either what I need to do during the game or I watch the film from the previous game to see what I need to do better going into the next game.  I even watch film from last year or the last time I played each team to see how I did and how they did and see where I can improve on and what I can do against their returning players.

How would you say you get yourself ready for games on game days?

I wake up in the morning and try to get mentally ready immediately, I even try to listen to music but also have songs playing in my head so I stay focused. I also like to get a prayer in every morning but especially on game days because I want to thank God for letting me wake up and then I go to school and listen to music and keep my mind right throughout the day. Music is really what helps me get and stay in the right mindset. Another thing is right before we start the game, seeing all the fans outside really just gets me ready to play and gets me hyped up like nothing else. Seeing all those people in the stands makes me want to go as hard as I can because I don’t want to disappoint them or my team.

What would you say you love the most about playing football?

The game atmosphere, being in the stadium playing under those Friday Night Lights, seeing all my teammates fired up ready to go to war with me.

How would you describe yourself as a player and a teammate?

Myself and my teammates would describe me as a nasty player. Every time I’m on the field I’m trying to get a pancake block. My goal is to make my opponent quit mentally and physically and I want to break their will. That’s not because I dislike them, but because I’m better than them. I want to be mean, I don’t want to be nice to the opponent.

What do you hope to get or accomplish by playing football like what do you want to do Beyond High School football?

I want to make it to the NFL point blank. That’s my dream, that’s my goal, that’s where I’m headed. I’ve been blessed with an opportunity to play at the Collegiate level and I’m going to take that and run with it because my endgame is making it to the pros.
