Catholic of Point Coupee High had an impressive 54-12 Week 2 victory over Crowley in a game where their star players shined. The Hornets were able to move to 2-0 on their season and hopefully carry their momentum as they look ahead to next week, where they play Archbishop Hannan on the road.
On this Friday evening, we were able to see the Hornets utilize their run game, primarily running behind #2 Brooks Clapps, who had 3 TDs in the first half and #7 Parker Jewell, who had two TDs. Other key contributors were #7 Jude Morrison who had one rushing TD and many key conversions through the air and with his legs, #5 Luke Vosburg with his own touchdown, and standout lineman #58 Rory Lambert.
As Crowley moves to 1-1, they try not to let this game affect them as they look to face East Beauregard next Friday at home. To be as blunt as possible, they had a bad game that was littered with penalties and errors, but this does not mean their season is over. They have the opportunity to get back in the win column this upcoming Friday. Their two standouts were #5 Floyd Flugence and #7 Marcus Etienne
Both the Hornets and the Gents were committed to running the football throughout the entire game and both teams embraced physicality in this match-up. The Hornets were able to get an early 22-0 first quarter lead and never let their foot off of the gas after that point as they continued to execute their game plan better than their opponent did tonight. However, the Gents were able to show fight as they scored in the 4th Quarter, which they can take as momentum and a high note onto their next game.
After the game, I was able to interview Coach Carruth and Brooks Capps.
“I think we played pretty well. We were physical upfront and we dominated them at the line of scrimmage. We knew it would be like that going in, that’s our calling card. Everybody knows when you play Catholic Pointe Coupee, you better come ready to hit and you better be physical because we’re gonna punch you in the mouth. Our offensive line and defensive line too, really set the tone for the game. They opened up holes, everyone on offense contributed. It was great to see so many guys get involved in the scoring.
Coach Carruth when asked on how he thought they played tonight.
“We were relentless, its something we preach. Our guys, when we see someone ready to tap out, all it does is rejuvenate them. Our guys, in the second half, should’ve been tired and dragging because we don’t have the depth to play a bunch of different guys and give people breaks, but our guys in the second half told me, “Coach they’re tapping out, they’re quitting, I just got a breathe of air, lets keep going”.
Coach Carruth when asked on how he was able to maintain dominance.
“Hopefully more of the same, I know we have a quality opponent in Archbishop Hannan, so once again we’re playing up in classification. Week 1 we had a 2a, this week we had a 3a, next week we have a 4a, so we just keep stepping up levels of competition and we know they’re going to have a lot more guys than we do, but we’ve got what we got and that’s all we need.
Coach Carruth when asked on what to expect next week
“I felt I played good, I had a few mistakes. I had one fumble but other than that I thought I played really good.”
Brooks Clapps when asked how he thought he played
In totality, this was a great victory for the Catholic of Pointe Coupee Hornets that is crucial towards their season as they continue to play up in classification and test their limits. This was an all around dominant victory on all three sides of the ball and hopefully they can take this style of play and apply it this upcoming Friday as they play Archbishop Hannan on the road in which wills surely be a tough game for them.
Below, are a couple photos that I took of the game
