A Classic Win

By: Aniyah T. Foley

This past Saturday the Grambling State University Tigers played against the Prairie View A&M Panthers in their annual State Fair Classic. With their second SWAC (Southwestern Athletic Conference) matchup of the season, the Tigers have managed to redefine what it means to be determined. After a 70-54 win, Grambling State University has risen to become the SWAC’s number one contender in the west division. That being said, the Tigers had a phenomenal game to say the least! Throwing six and running in another, Grambling’s QB Johnathan Williams was a vital element involved in the Tigers’ success with his inclusion in seven of their ten touchdowns made. Williams’ fellow teammate RB, Jestin Kelly, also carved his own path on the gridiron by claiming 88 of the Tigers’ 127 totals rushing yards. On the receiving end, Grambling’s Chad Williams had an 83 yard play during the first quarter which attributed to the 193 yards he accumulated against the Panthers. Stacked with talent, Grambling’s WR’s Chad Williams and Chester Rogers also both brought in their own pair of touchdowns on their road to victory. In addition to the two kick returns that he transformed into touchdowns, sophomore WR Martez Carter, was also Grambling’s final scorer of the night with his touch down in the fourth quarter. Looking deeper into the season, Saturday’s matchup allowed the Tigers to viciously demonstrate the level of skill that’s required from Coach Jackson’s Tigers in order to dominate the rankings in their division. So far the Tigers have remained undefeated within their conference, next week the Tigers will be traveling to Jackson, MS to continue this trend on Saturday, October 3. The Jackson State University Tigers will attempt to battle the GSU Tigers in the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium but it should be known that GSU definitely has the firepower to takedown any obstacle up ahead of them. Watch out for the Black and Gold Tigers this weekend as they show Jackson State University what it truly means to be a Tiger.
