Cajuns suffer tough loss to the Zips

By: Dave Parks, Intern

LAFAYETTE- The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns fought hard but came up short Saturday in their 35-14 loss to the Akron Zips. The Cajuns fall to 1-2 on the year but have plenty of time to turn things around and extend their bowl streak.

Akron started off the scoring in the first half with a quick 14 points, but the Cajuns answered with an Elijah McGuire touchdown run in the second quarter. The Cajuns were unable to score again until late in the fourth, coming on a Jalen Nixon touchdown pass to Gabe Fuselier.

Nixon led the passing attack with 96 yards and a touchdown. Brooks Haack also passed for 77 yards. McGuire had 83 yards rushing with a touchdown, and also hauled in three catches. Torrey Pierce added 19 yards on the ground, and had a nice touchdown run called back because of a penalty. Fuselier led the receivers with five receptions for 50 yards and a touchdown. Al Riles and Nick Byrne each added 38 yards receiving.

Defensively, the Cajuns’ Zachary Degrange picked off an Akron pass for his first career interception.

The Cajuns travel to Ruston next week for a tough test against the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs. The Bulldogs are 2-2 on the year. The Cajuns will regroup from this loss and hope to get thing going next week, building momentum for the rest of the season.
