With their back against the wall facing a fourth down and goal at the one yard line holding on to a 27-20 lead, the Lutcher defense made the game winning play with defensive tackle Quantez Joseph getting in the backfield and tackling Abednego Stephens for a loss with 13 seconds left to play in the ball game.

While the defense ended the game, it was the offense that got the game started in the first half. Freshman quarterback Terron Charles ripped off a 45 yard touchdown run to give the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead. After a surprise onside kick immediately after the opening touchdown, the Bulldogs added to their lead with a 32 yard touchdown run from Jaimylon Joseph to make it a 14-0 lead.

The Liberty Magnet Patriots responded on their opening drive with Gridiron Football All-American invitee running back Zaiden Foster breaking off a 36 yard touchdown to pull within one score at 14-6.

Lutcher scored on their third straight drive with another touchdown run from Joseph this time from 24 yards out to make it 21-6.

Once again, the Patriots would not go away. The rushing attack would lean on their bellcow Foster again before Brice Preston would end up throwing a short touchdown pass to Conner Nairn before Foster would punch the ball in for the two point conversion at 21-14.

With a minute left to go before halftime, Charles throws a touchdown pass to 6’4 wideout Johnny Jones, who was able to catch a jump ball for a 11 yard score to give the Bulldogs a 27-14 lead to halftime.

The Patriots defense would shutout the Bulldogs in the second half while the Patriots were playing ball control offense led by their leading back Zaiden Foster, who rumbled down to the one yard line on a 44 yard run, which would lead to a one yard touchdown run from Brice Preston to make it 27-20.

Both teams would change possessions before Liberty had an opportunity to tie or even go for the win with a touchdown and a two point conversion. The Patriots milked the last seven minutes of the game until the last 15 seconds of the game that set up the goal line stand.

Both rushing attacks got going for both teams this game. Zaiden Foster had the ball over 30 times rushing for over 200 yards and a touchdown in the game. For the Bulldogs, Jaimylon Joseph had his breakout game rushing for 96 yards and two touchdowns while Terron Charles ran for 102 yards and one touchdown to go along with his one passing touchdown.

“Getting the two touchdowns, that’s how you set the tone and win the game. Our guys never quit.”

After starting the season at 0-2 to start the season, it was a big win for Dwain Jenkins and the Lutcher Bulldogs to get a victory over a Liberty Magnet football team led by Jimmy Zachery that entered the game with a 2-0 record.

“It just shows that you can win games and we are capable of winning games both ways. In the first half, we came out offensively and put up a lot of points. We moved the ball at will. In the second half, it became a defensive struggle and our defense stepped up and answered the call whenever they needed to. The second half showed a lot of maturity for a young football team to overcome the adversity that we saw. We had a chance to end the game away if that is a muffed punt and we get the ball inside the five. We can punch it in there and end the game. We don’t get that call. I thought that was a big third down play that I thought there were some guys past the line of scrimmage when the quarterback was scrambling around and they were able to pick up a first down on that play. We had a chance to end the game and we miss a snap. He snaps it every day and is a three year starter for us, but it was one of those things that it slipped out his hand in unfortunate time. You just thought that all these things were snowballing against us and maybe, it’s not our night, but our guys continued to believe and we just talked about just playing the next play. Don’t worry about the results. Just play the next play. All we told them on the fourth down play was that it was the next play. Just go win the next play and let the results show what they are.”
