This morning, Zachary linebacker Dylan Shelmire announced his commitment to Southeastern Louisiana University on social media. The 6’1, 220 pound All-District linebacker chose the Lions over other offers which include Lamar and Southern.
For Shelmire, the decision to play college football in Hammond, America came down to more than just football.
“What led me to commit to Southeastern Louisiana University is that they offer the degree program I’m passionate about-Sports Management. Additionally, their new state of the art athletic facility, which has recently broken ground, shows their commitment to athletic excellence. Most importantly, over the past several months, I’ve built a strong relationship with the coaching staff, which made the decision even more meaningful.”

Now, Shelmire’s focus is on the upcoming season and bringing Zachary back to a state championship.
“It’s always been the goal. That’s where we want to end our season every single year. That’s where we need to be at going forward.”

Last season, Shelmire posted 72 tackles, 11 TFLs, 2 FFs, 1 sack, 5 QB hurries, and 1 PBU. He has high aspirations this year not only for his team, but himself as well.
“Last year, I had a pretty solid season. This year, I want to take it to another step. Instead of 70 tackles, I want to get up to 90 at least. That’s the goal this upcoming season because last year was a good year on a personal level, but I thought it wasn’t good enough. This year is going to be better than the year before.”

Although focused on the upcoming season, the Gridiron Football All-American Bowl Game invitee wants to make sure that Lion fans know what kind of player that they are getting when he arrives on campus next year.
“The biggest strengths to my game are my IQ, how physical I am at the point of attack, and just how I carry myself on the field because one thing I know is that you can’t be soft on the football field. You got to be physical at all points of the game. It doesn’t matter if you’re on kickoff, kickoff return. It doesn’t matter if you are a punter. You have to be physical.”
