Tough Loss for the Cowboys

Tough Loss for the Cowboys

This weekend proved to be a tough one for the McNeese State Cowboys as they traveled to Texas to take on the Sam Houston State Bearkats. Coming into this game the Cowboys had played dominant football beating their last three opponents by 40 or more points. On the other side line, the Bearkats came into this game after a good win last week at Lamar University. The Cowboys and the Bearkats both came into this game 1-0 in the Southland Conference, which is a conference that has proven to be wide open with a lot of good teams. Furthermore, coming into this game the Cowboys were ranked No. 4 in the FCS National polls. Unfortunately, the Cowboys did not start this game off with the same fire that they have started all of their others games with. The Bearkats did come out early in this game jumping off to a 14-0 lead over the Cowboys. Going into halftime the score was 21-7 Bearkats, which is very different for the Cowboys who usually go into half with a big lead. The Cowboys did have a little comeback in the second half but they were unable to pull out a win as they lost to the Bearkats 38 to 22.

Junior Quarterback Daniel Sams took on the lead role as starting QB in this game against the Bearkats. Sams went 11-of-25 for 84 yards and 1 TD throwing in this game. However, like most of his games, Sams lead the rushing leaders for the Cowboys with 130 yards on 20 carries with 1 TD. Junior Running Back Derrick Milton was the Cowboys second leading rusher with 57 yards on 12 carries. Junior Wide Receiver David Bush led the receiving core for the Cowboys with 2 receptions for 21 yards. The defense for the Cowboys forced two turnovers for the Bearkats throughout the game. Although the Cowboys did not leave Texas with the win, Cowboy fans still have a lot to look forward to this season. The Cowboys will still come out of this week with a solid rank and they will still come out as a team that is capable of winning the rest of their games.
