This game was over before it even started, linebackers K’Lavon Chaisson and Michael Divinity were playing chess while the Longhorns were playing checkers. The two Tigers got into the heads of their opponents by walking over to the Texas bench area, during warmups, and helped themselves to some of the Longhorns water. Some of the Longhorns took offense to this, because a small squabble broke out shortly after that.
LSU started out strong defensively forcing Texas to punt on their first possession. The Tigers would go on an 11 play drive that would end with them settling for a field goal. The Longhorns would rally back in the first, driving all the way down to the LSU 2 yard line, only to have the lead touchdown fall right through the outstretched hands of sophomore running back Keaontay Ingram on 4th and Goal. The Tigers would take over at their own two yard line and quarterback Joe Burrow would throw his first interception of the season, leading to a Longhorns offensive possession inside the Tigers five yard line. The Tigers defense held and did not allow a score. After four straight attempts the Longhorn offense could only muster two yards.
After that, the offense started to roll for the Tigers scoring on three straight drives. Including a three play, 58 yard drive that took just 26 seconds off the clock. Quarterback Joe Burrow would find receiver Justin Jefferson in the back of the end zone for a 21 yard touchdown reception. This would be the touchdown the Tigers scored just before halftime. Giving them the lead 20-7 over the Longhorns.
Coming back out in the second half the Tigers offense seemed to stall. A 3-and-out for the Tigers led them to punt to the Longhorns. After which, the Longhorns would go on a 19 play 86 yard drive that would take up nearly the entire third quarter. This would tie the longest drive in Texas history. “We have to get better on tackling, some of our best players missed tackles tonight. So we’ll go back and look at that and work on that.” Coach Ed Orgeron said about the tackling tonight.
LSU quarterback Joe Burrow seemed like a man possessed. He would not let the Tiger lead slip away, every time the Longhorns seemed to be within striking distance, Burrow would move the bar just a little bit more. Just like the way he wiggled out of a sack on 3rd and 17 at their own 39 and completed an impossible pass to receiver Justin Jefferson for a touchdown. Also being the first quarterback in LSU history to have three different receivers go for over the hundred yard receiving mark, and the third quarterback to pass for over 400 yards in a game.
LSU showed that their offense last week was not a fluke. Joe Burrow told the media earlier this pre-season “don’t be surprised when we score 40, 50 or 60 points a game on people.” Their new style offense is becoming talked about on a national scale. The resilience of Joe Burrow showed through tonight, taking a couple of big hits, and picking himself up off the turf to throw to his next open receiver.
“We are going to keep getting better, we have the system to get better, we have the receivers to get better and the quarterback to get better. We are going to get better.” Coach Orgeron stated about how he sees the Tigers going forward.
The Tigers will have a lot of confidence going forward especially after such a huge win over a Top 10 opponent in Austin. But according to quarterback Joe Burrow “we had over 500 yards of offense, but we could have had over 600 or 700. So, there is still a lot of improvement we need to work on.”
At the end of the day, two perennial power houses went toe to toe with each other, and the first one to blink was going to be the one to walk away with a loss. That one to blink was Texas. (Texas is NOT back)
