On my second stop of Spring Tour 2023, I stopped in to see the Salmen High Spartans in Slidell, La. Salmen has been coached by Eric Chuter for the past six years as head coach and 21 years total. Over his tenure as head coach at Salmen, the Spartans have made the playoffs four times while also coaching two Gridiron Football All-Americans.
Salem has a rich history in winning. Coach Chuters predecessor coach Jerry Leonard coached at Salmen for 16 season with an overall record of 101-66, with his predecessor coach Bill Stubbs coaching at Salmen for 13 season with a record of 140-40 dating back to 1989. “We have ghosts in our locker room,” said coach Chuter, “it is our responsibility to honor our past. Our kids do a great job in honoring the schools traditions.”
After attending practice, I saw a well oiled program where the players are eager to learn from their coaches and are excited for the future of the program. Each of the players I interviewed spoke of the expectations of going 1 and 0 each week this upcoming season.
This team is led by upcoming Senior QB Cameron Dorsey who has the size to be a recruitable player. Senior WR Damon Narcisse is 6’4″ an 200 lbs. “I think he can put another 20-25 pounds on his frame,” said coach Chuter. Damon is a two way player playing Safety and linebacker as well as receiver. Class of 2024 RB Jacobi Jefferson has great bursts and can find the wholes his line makes. I like class of 2025 DE DeReyon Jenkins and his explosiveness off the snap. He has a tall frame at 6’4″, just needs to bulk up this summer.
From the looks of things, the Spartans to be playoff bound in 2023. This team has a promising future.
