Southeastern Names Ross Jenkins Assistant Football Coach

HAMMOND, La.  – Southeastern Louisiana has added Ross Jenkins to its football coaching staff, SLU head coach Frank Scelfo announced on Monday.

Jenkins’ hire is pending approval by the University of Louisiana System’s Board of Supervisors.

Jenkins will work with the special teams and as offensive assistant. A three-year starter at quarterback at Louisiana Tech, the Houston, Texas native returns to Louisiana after multiple coaching stops. During Jenkins’ playing days, Scelfo was his offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, building a bond that lasts to this day.

“Ross is one of the best competitors I’ve ever coached,” Scelfo said. “He’s a tremendous leader and we’re excited to have him as a member of our program. Ross possesses all the qualities we’re looking for in an assistant coach.”

Jenkins spent the spring as the offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach and recruiting coordinator at Lake Erie College in Ohio. Prior to heading to Ohio, he spent five seasons at the wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator at Wingate University.

During his time at Wingate, he was also in charge of the kick return units and coached all returners. In 2017, one of his charges, BJ Muckelvene, was a second team AFCA All-American selection.

The Bulldogs won the South Atlantic Conference championship last season, ranking 24th in the final national polls after a NCAA Division II playoff appearance. Jenkins also coached wide receiver Jordan Berry to four All-Conference seasons during his time at Wingate.

Prior to Wingate, he spent a season as the wide receivers coach at Murray State. He started his coaching career as a graduate assistant and inside receivers coach at Eastern New Mexico.

“I’m very excited to join the Southeastern program and be a member of Coach Scelfo’s staff,” Jenkins commented. “Coach Scelfo has been one of my biggest supporters and mentors as I’ve entered the coaching ranks. He taught me most of what I know about the game of football and it’s a great opportunity to be able to coach under him. I’m fired up to be back in Louisiana and happy to be a part of the winning tradition at Southeastern.”

A 2010 graduate of Louisiana Tech, Jenkins was a three-time WAC Scholar-Athlete Award winner on the way to earning his bachelor’s degree in business economics. He helped Louisiana Tech to an appearance in the 2008 Independence Bowl – the program’s first in 31 years – and was named the Terry Bradshaw Offensive Player of the Year as a senior.

Jenkins and his wife, Sara, wed in June 2017. The couple resides in Covington.

The Lions will officially report to campus on July 31 with the first practice of fall camp set for August 1. Southeastern opens the 2018 season on Aug. 30 with a 7 p.m. contest at ULM.
