HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana football team continued its preparations for the 2018 season with a competitive workout Wednesday morning at Strawberry Stadium.
The Lions were back in full pads after competing in shells on Tuesday. SLU worked on late-game situations in the team portions of Wednesday’s workout and saw big plays made on both sides of the ball.
Southeastern’s first big play on the offensive side of the ball came in the running game. Junior Devonte Williams got free down the left sideline and raised untouched for a 60-plus yard touchdown.
Later in the practice, SLU made a big play in the passing game. Junior Chason Virgil scrambled away from the Lion pass rush and found freshman CJ Turner for a long pass inside the 10-yard line. On the next play, Virgil found junior Javon Conner open for a touchdown.
While the offense had their moments, it was the defense who put an exclamation point on the eighth practice of the fall. Junior Matthew Wright broke through the line to block a long field goal attempt by senior Jonathan Tatum. Sophomore Will Douglas scooped up the loose ball and raced for a 50-plus yard touchdown on the day’s final play.
SLU will return to the practice field on Thursday at 9 a.m. Southeastern opens the 2018 season on Aug. 30 with a 7 p.m. contest at ULM.

Season ticket holders will also be able to participate in the Season Ticket Party, set for Aug. 25 from 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. in the south end zone of Strawberry Stadium.
