Today, we are highlighting the Ovey Comeaux Spartans from Lafayette, Louisiana, who compete in the LHSAA and are building exciting momentum in their football program. The Spartans have waves of positive energy flowing throughout the team after recently breaking a 35-game losing streak and finishing the season 5-5, their first .500 record since 2019, a clear sign of growth and renewed confidence. While the program has not always been known for overall team success, Comeaux has produced standout talent, including notable alumni Brandon Stokley, Malik Nabers, and Tre Harris, all of whom have gone on to perform at the highest level in the NFL. A name that current head coach Marquis Newsome is especially excited about is rising senior running back Jaden Celestine, who has cemented himself as the team’s starting back since his freshman year. Coming off a strong junior season that earned him Honorable Mention All-State, First Team All-District, and Lafayette Player of the Year honors, Celestine’s drive and work ethic continue to stand out, and Coach Newsome believes he is poised for a monster senior season with strong All-State expectations. Heading into his fourth year with the program, Coach Newsome feels things are finally starting to fall into place and is energized by the Spartans’ direction, making the future of Comeaux football one to watch.

Q/A with Head Coach Marquis Newsome!
How would you describe the culture of your program?
It’s been a work in progress; this is year 4, but guys are starting to step into leadership roles and hold eachother accountable. I’d say about 80% of the time is fully bought in.
What kind of players succeed here on and off the field?
Those who are hungry and dedicated to getting better. Have to remain humble and can’t ever get satisfied.
What values are most important in your locker room?
Dedication and accountability, I feel the first couple of years we lacked accountability, trying to create a culture of people who want to show up
What does your strength and conditioning program look like?
It’s extremely varied. We have designated coaches for different days; we have power days, plyometric days, conditioning days, and movement days, so that players don’t completely get used to specific workouts.
How do you help players improve their football IQ?
Constant film sessions, but also teaching players how to watch film. That way, they can learn the “why” behind things.
How often do players get feedback?
Daily. Everything is recorded, and you get evaluated based on the film, no matter the talent level. The goal is to open these players up to receiving criticism to prepare them for college.
How does your program support academic success?
Holding them accountable with consistent grade checks. Recently as a team we didn’t meet the standard, so the weight room and field have been locked, and we have been having team study hall instead.
How do you decide who plays?
A mixture of film and production. Some guys are game players; others are practice players. The goal is to find players who are both. There’s no such thing as waiting your turn; the best players will play regardless of age.
How long has your staff been together?
Going on 4 years, there have been some changes along the way, but for the most part, we have been together for a few seasons. Last season was definitely my best season. I give a lot of credit to Coach Payne, who is my assistant head coach.
What is a quote you stand by?
“The standard is the standard.” – Mike Tomlin
How do you prepare your players for life after football?
Having a standard and reminding them that football is temporary. The goal is to make them great men, fathers, and contributors to society.
How connected are former players to the program?
Very connected. Malik Nabers, Tre Harris, and other guys come back and work out with the players and take them under their wing. There is an open-door policy, so guys are always welcome to come back. It creates a bond and strengthens the community around the program while also giving the current players hope.
