Nate Cox leads the way for the Cougars

Lafayette, LA- St. Thomas More has been playing outstanding football as of lately and most of it can be attributed to the strong play from Senior Quarterback Nate Cox.  Coach Hightower had a few things to say as well regarding his team’s performance and several key players on the Cougar football team.

  1. How is your team performing so far this year?

The team has made good progress over the course of the season. We have played a very competitive schedule and have been involved in 5 games that have been decided in the closing minutes.

  1. What are your team strengths?

Our offense has been very steady this year with a good balance between running and passing. Nate Cox has developed much faster than we anticipated as our starting quarterback. His performance, and that of the receiving corp has been impressive. The recent return from injury of La. Tech commitment Griffin Hebert has only bolstered the receiver group of Matthew Lagrange, Mason Pesson, Ben Moody and Matthew Gautreaux. Running backs Gabe LeBeouf and Chris Primeaux have been steady performers.

The defense has had to overcome numerous injuries to key performers, especially in the secondary. Hunter Clay and Sam Greenwood have been steady in the middle. Brennan Langlinais and Connor Latiolais have also been solid.

  1. Is there anything that you would like to see the team improve on?

The kicking game has been a work in progress from the start of the season. There is still work to be done.

  1. Describe your team’s chemistry/character.

This team has great character and senior leadership. Their work habits are exceptional. The Seniors understand what needs to be done in order for us to be successful and they set a great example for the younger guys.

Seniors Griffin Hebert and Nate Cox have really uplifted the offensive side of the ball. The Louisiana Tech commit, Hebert uses his 6’3 body frame very well and can compete for any ball with his great hands.  Nate Cox is an absolute monster standing at 6’8 and already accounting for 24 touchdowns on the season already with just 2 interceptions against solid competition.  The duo will look to expand on their recent success as they look to win district this year holding an overall 5-3 record with a 3-0 record in district.

Through 8 games, Nate Cox has racked up 1,860 yards on 114/187 completions.  He is averaging 3.0 touchdowns a game along with a 232.5 yards per game.  Cox has an impressive 127.2 QB rating.  Fellow senior and favorite target Griffin Hebert has only played 3 games this year due to injury, but has 8 receptions for 149 yards and 4 touchdowns.
