LSU Fall Practice #5 Report: Defense Has Good Day Led By Harold Perkins Jr.

To start the week off, we got to see some tight competition towards the end of today’s practice, especially some 7v7 and 11v11 competition with the 1s, 2s, and 3s.

In 7v7 action, Whit Weeks got back with the first team defense after being limited on Saturday. He, West Weeks, Harold Perkins, Mansoor Delane, Ashton Stamps, Dashawn Spears, and A.J. Haulcy made up that side of the football.

Garrett Nussmeier finished the 7v7 drill completing 4 of 7 passes with completions to Kyle Parker, Nic Anderson, Bauer Sharp, and Destyn Hill, but he did throw an interception straight to Harold Perkins Jr. The interception was the highlight of the day for the defense, but Perkins had his best outing of fall camp so far with multiple hurries to the quarterback and tracking down Bauer Sharp after he caught an shovel pass from Nussmeier.

Michael Van Buren got the second team reps during 7v7 and 11v11. He completed passes to Destyn Hill, Kylan Billiot, and Jelani Watkins. Da’Shawn Spears, PJ Woodland, and DJ Pickett all had PBUs while Mansoor Delane and Ashton Stamps showed good coverage on their receivers during other drills.

Making the transition to 11v11 play, the stating offense has been the same as it has been since the start of fall camp with the wide receivers rotating in after every play. Brian Kelly stated today that there is an open competition at the guard spots with DJ Chester, Coen Echols, Paul Mubenga, and Josh Thompson.

It is also interesting to note that Ju’Juan Johnson got some reps today at wide receiver. Along with being at running back and quarterback, Brian Kelly has asked plenty of the former LCA quarterback and it would be interesting to see if he would be able to redshirt this season.

Defensively, the front included Gabriel Reliford and Kolaj Cobbins at defensive end as well as Jack Pyburn and Bernard Gooden at defensive tackle. Jardin Gilbert and Javien Toviano were the safeties, but AJ Haulcy also was in the rotation as well.

Garrett Nussmeier started the 11v11 with a quick screen to Barion Brown and it is clear to see what kind of second gear the Kentucky transfer has as his quickness is going to be tough to stop. Then, Nussmeier fired over and made a nice throw to Chris Hilton Jr. for 15 years. Caden Durham got back to back carries with the first being a three yard run stuffed by Bernard Gooden and the second was a long run that could have gone for a touchdown.

PJ Woodland blanketed Barion Brown off a deep throw from Michael Van Buren. Woodland has been solid all fall camp long and is making his case to get a lot of playing time this fall. Caden Durham had another big gainer on the ground as the freshman All-SEC running back looks like he is going to build off a great freshman campaign.

The first team defense won the war in 7v7 and 11v11 play, but the offense did win their fair share of battles. Nussmeier finished the session by making back to back impressive dimes. One was a back shoulder throw to Trey’Dez Green who kept his foot in bounds and caught the pass over Jardin Gilbert. The other was a beautiful over the shoulder throw from 20 yards out to Chris Hilton Jr., who beat DJ Pickett off the line.

The practice concluded with a big hit from AJ Haulcy on Zavion Thomas and a Tyren Singleton tackle for loss.

The competition is starting to ramp up as Brian Kelly stated that they are going to start tackling tomorrow, and a final note is that Aaron Anderson is expected to return back to practice on Wednesday.
