For the third LSU fall practice, the media got a great treat as the quarterbacks, wide receivers, and defensive backs started the practice with some 1v1s.
The player that stood out the most during 1v1s was Ka’Morreun Pimpton, who made one acrobatic grab while falling down, and then ran a nice route against DaShawn Spears to catch another pass. Pimpton and freshman Trey’Dez Green have been incredibly impressive as big receiving targets for the Tigers offense and both should factor in to get a lot of looks going their way in the fall at tight end.
Speaking of getting a lot of looks, the receivers are looking the part once again including Kyren Lacy, who has stepped up to be the first receiving option for quarterback Garrett Nussmeier. Lacy has made impressive grabs everyday we have been out there and today was no exception as he made a toe tapping catch along the sidelines against PJ Woodland. When the team went to 11v11, Chris Hilton Jr. was able to haul in a deep reception from Nussmeier while Kyle Parker was able to get a couple of catches and even some reps with the ones. Aaron Anderson and CJ Daniels have been getting in there getting first team reps while freshmen Kylan Billiot and Jelani Watkins have shown some promise.
When it came to Garrett Nussmeier, he had a strong start to the drive connecting with Hilton, Mason Taylor, and Kyle Parker, but however, he was picked off in the end zone by Ashton Stamps. So far, during fall camp, Stamps has stood out physically and has made a lot of plays to be one of the favorites for the starting cornerback job. While also getting bigger and stronger in the weight room, the Archbishop Rummel product could be in for a breakout campaign.
While Stamps is at one of the starting cornerback spots, Sage Ryan is currently the other starting cornerback, but however, freshman PJ Woodland has made some plays as well and has shown that he can matchup well against some of the Tigers’ top wide receivers in practice. During 1v1s, Major Burns was grabbing his hamstring allowing Ju’Juan Johnson to get some first team STAR reps behind Burns, but Burns would end up coming back to practice. Jardin Gilbert and Jordan Allen are currently the two starting safeties while freshman DaShawn Spears and Kylin Jackson are with the second team.
On the defensive line, Jacobian Guillory and Gio Paez continue to man the interior as the first team options, but Kimo Makane’ole, Shone Washington, Jay’viar Suggs, and Dominick McKinley have been the three players consistently getting reps in the rotation. With edge rusher Bradyn Swinson and defensive tackle Jalen Lee still missing practice, it allowed for other players to get some reps. On the edge, Saivion Jones and Da’Shawn Womack got the first team reps, but it allowed for guys like Paris Shand, Gabriel Reliford, Dylan Carpenter, and Kolaj Cobbins to get some looks. Keep an eye on freshmen Reliford and Cobbins as they have been two guys that have flashed on the field.
Finally, there have been some eyes on the offensive line with Tyree Adams, Paul Mubenga, Coen Echols, Christian Stamps, and Bo Bordelon getting second team reps behind the usual candidates in the first group. With four of the five being either true freshmen or redshirt freshmen, it is important for this group to develop as four of the five current star linemen are either seniors or NFL Draft eligible. The starting five of Will Campbell, Emery Jones, Garrett Dellinger, Miles Frazier, and DJ Chester shows why the offensive line has been highly regarded and at times has handled the defensive line in practice.
Tomorrow’s practice will be a viewing session only so no pictures or video, but the media will have access to the full practice and we will also get updates from Brian Kelly. For more LSU football coverage, make sure to visit our website daily at www.gridironfootballusa.com!
