Louisiana Match-Up: Southern University takes on McNeese State University

This Saturday the Southern Jaguars are heading to Lake Charles to play the McNeese Cowboys for an exciting in state football battle. The last time these two teams faced one another was all the way back in 2004 when the Cowboys came out on top 35-17 thanks to their rushing game. The match up between these two teams was set up back in 2017 as the Southern Jaguars looked to expand their reach and recognition for not only their talented football program, but their university as a whole.

Going into this match up, the Cowboys have a hard working and fast paced team that is widely recognized for their fiery play early in games. Not only have they received some great transfers from different schools this season but they are lead by quarterback Cody Orgeron, a dual threat quarterback, who happens to be the son of the head LSU coach Ed Orgeron. Cody played 3 games this past season and with that he managed to score over 500 yards and earned his spot as a starter for the Cowboys who will have an array of strong receivers on his side Saturday evening. McNeese has a great history of home season openers as they have won the last seven and are currently undefeated against SWAC teams.

On the other hand, the mighty Southern Jaguars are coming with one of their most experienced and knowledgeable teams thus far. Coach Odom’s program had the luxury of retaining 7 defensive starters that are excited and ready to take on the 2019 season. The Jaguars will be led by quarterback Ladarius Skelton who will also be serving as the starting quarterback for the first time. He raked up just over 1,500 yards last season and will be backed by his returning offensive line. Another tool Southern has is running back Devon Benn who scored shy of 800 yards with a 5.1 yard per carry average his 2018 season. With all these factors being taken into consideration the Jaguars will be able to see how there seasoned player will handle their first match up and attempt to obtain the first win for a SWAC team against the Cowboys.

Southern and McNeese both have tremendous athletes looking to start their season on a positive note so there is no doubt this will be an intriguing season kick off. Not only will this be an exciting experience for the fans of each university but for the state of Louisiana as a whole.
