LC vs Belhaven Preview

Louisiana College football returns to Wildcat Stadium for another week as they cap off an exciting Homecoming weekend on campus hosting Belhaven University. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. from Wildcat Stadium and can be heard live on 104.3 FM The Bridge and viewed via www.lcwildcats.net.

LC (3-4, 3-3 ASC) suffered a disappointing loss to American Southwest Conference rival East Texas Baptist University last week 48-27. The Wildcats found themselves trailing 34-7 at halftime and were able to pull within two touchdowns in early in the fourth quarter but the margin was too much for them to overcome on the night.

Mason Jordan had his second 400+ yard passing performance in the last three weeks with four more touchdowns but three costly interceptions, including a pick-6 that ended the first half for the Tigers. The team produced a much better, and more typical, LC performance in the second half but the ground was too much to make up. The LC defense held ETBU to just 93 yards of total offense in the second half, forcing one turnover and four punts, giving the offense the chance they needed to try and make the epic comeback, but it was not to be.

Belhaven is fresh off a 49-0 defeat at the hands of #2 Mary Hardin-Baylor in Jackson, Miss. In the game they were held to just 84 total yards through four quarters, their lowest output of the season. While the Blazers have gone away from the air raid offense under new head coach Blaine McCorkle, their focus has shifted more to sound defense than a highflying offense.

This season the Blazers rank last in the ASC in scoring at 10.4 points per game but are fifth in the conference in scoring defense allowing 29.0 points per game. They are also fifth best in the conference at stopping the run and third in pass defense.

Blazer QB Hunter McEachern has seen the biggest change in production from the Belhaven of the past few years. He ended the 2017 season with the highest passing average in the conference at 346.1 yards per game. This year he currently sits sixth in the ASC at 166.1 yards per game.

“This year’s Belhaven team is a little bit tougher when it comes to running the football and playing defense,” Head Coach Justin Charles said. “When you’re used to seeing four and five wide from them the majority of the time and now you have a tight end and two backs in the backfield it’s a whole different ball game.

“I think our guys are geared towards playing it right now because we’ve seen so many different things and this is what we’ve seen in practice a lot because we have this kind of offense in our repertoire as well.”

Saturday’s game will be broadcast live on The Bridge 104.3 FM and through the station’s web site beginning with the pre-game show starting at 5:30 p.m. with Rich Dupree, Doug Gann, and Al Quartemont. Live stat and video links are available at www.lcwildcats.net.

Saturday will serve as the 2018 Homecoming celebration for the Wildcats, with activities planned throughout the day leading up to kickoff. The 2018 class of distinguished alumni and hall of fame will be introduced prior to kickoff and the Homecoming court presented at halftime. Parking is available throughout campus on a first come first serve basis except for the reserved parking lot behind the stadium which is reserved for season ticket holders, LC Board of Visitors, and LC Trustees. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m., gates open one-hour before kickoff..
