Diamond In The Rough: Jack Bech

Jack Bech is a 6’2″ wide receiver out of St. Thomas More High School in Lafayette, Louisiana. At 207 pounds, Bech uses his good size to be an aggressive blocker and an exceptional route runner. He also has excellent hands, which are utilized in two ways as Bech is on the basketball team as well at St. Thomas More. He also has an impressive leaping ability. He is always working to improve his craft and is passionate about this sport. Bech has earned First Team All-District, First Team All-State, First Team All-Metro, First Team All-Acadiana, and Sport’s Illustrated All-American.

At what age did you begin playing football?

I began playing when I was around seven.

Did anything or anyone motivate you to play this sport?

One of my uncles, Brett Bech, played in the NFL and for LSU alongside Jamie Howard. My other uncle, Blaine, also played football for LSU in 2003 when they won the National Championship against Oklahoma. Growing up in a football oriented family, you’re always around the sport and always talking about it. It just made me want to be great.

Do you play any other sports at St. Thomas More?

Yes, I also play basketball. I was like a shooting guard.

What would you say is your favorite thing about being a wide receiver?

Being able to get the ball in the open field and make plays is amazing. You run the route how it’s supposed to be ran but you can also put your own little touch on each route. Faking out the defensive backs is also great. It always usually one man to beat, sometimes two. It’s fun knowing you’ll have them to beat, then you can take it to the house.

What are some of the goals you have for next season?

I would like to break everything I did last season. I want more yards, more catches, and more touchdowns. Also, I would like to have an undefeated state championship season and repeat back to back.

Have you thought of what you would want to study post high school?

I would like to study business.

What’s been the highlight of your football career?

Definitely last year when we won the state championship game.

How do you think coaches and teammates would describe you as a player?

They would describe me as explosive. They would also say I have a great playmaking ability.

What type of things do you do in your offseason to keep yourself in shape?

Everyday, I have this thing where I try to do one thing to get better at football. It can be running, jumping, route running, working out and more things. I just try to do one thing per day to be better. I like to do as much as possible everyday to be the best football player I can be.

What activities are you involved in besides your sport?

I like to play video games. Call of Duty is my favorite video game. Occasionally, I like to fish and hunt.

Have you always been a wide receiver or have you ever played another position?

I was actually a quarterback when I played flag football. Then, I played running back. In sixth grade is when I made the swap to receiver.

What has football taught you about yourself or even life?

Football has taught me a lot of different lessons. It’s taught me that if you have a goal, always reach it. Never quit on yourself. Keep pushing and keep going. You have to work hard.

What would you say is your favorite thing about playing football in Louisiana?

The kids you play against, a good bit of them will go to a D1 school. Some will make it to the league. Knowing them and playing against them is great. Also just competing against them but still making friendships is a fun thing. The atmosphere in this state is also amazing to play in.

What would you tell younger players who want to play high school football one day?

I would tell them that if they have goals, never give up on them. You’ll always be able to reach them. Hard work pays off.
