LAFAYETTE. – The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns used a big second half to defeat the Texas State Bobcats by the score 49-27. The Cajuns offense got back on track and produced an impressive 526 total yards against only 351 for the Bobcats. UL improved to 2-3 on the year and 1-0 in confer
ence play after this game and will hope to carry this momentum into the rest of the season.
Texas State was able to jump out to an early 7-0 lead, but UL responded with an Al Riles touchdown grab from Jalen Nixon to tie the game before the first quarter was over. The Bobcats opened the second quarter with another quick score, but once again the Cajuns answered with a touchdown of their own. This time, Jamal Robinson made an acrobatic catch in the endzone with only 35 seconds left in the half.
The Cajuns came out of halftime with no intention of losing this game and took over. They scored quickly in the third quarter on another Robinson touchdown reception. After a defensive stop, Elijah McGuire scored from three yards out, making the score 28-14. The Cajuns expanded their lead to 21 points when Nixon raced for an 18-yard touchdown run late in the third. On the kickoff, Texas State’s Brandon Smith returned it 95 yards for the touchdown, but UL’s Jeryl Brazil was not impressed and took the following kickoff 100 yards for a Cajun touchdown. Torrey Pierce was able to add a touchdown in the fourth quarter giving the Cajuns a 49-27 win.
Nixon led the offense with 238 yards passing and three touchdowns, he also added 45 yards on the ground and a touchdown. McGuire ran for 170 yards on 28 carries and a touchdown. Pierce gained 56 yards of his own and added a touchdown. Riles had nine receptions 90 yards and a touchdown. Robinson had 4 receptions for 67 yards and two scores. Gabe Fuselier also had 51 yards receiving.
The Cajuns are off next Saturday before a big conference matchup against Arkansas State on October 20th at 7:00 p.m. The game will be nationally televised on ESPN2.
