Q&A with Robert Valdez

What makes your program unique this season?

“We have a lot of returning players that have had experience playing. We have guys that played early in their careers, and hopefully that helps us have a solid season.”

How would you describe your team’s identity this year?

“A hard-working, grinding type of team. Defense has to be solid, especially in the league we play in, and we just don’t want to beat ourselves.”

Who are some key players people should know about this season?

Elijah Menville (C – 3-year starter)
Greg Shields (OL – returning starter)
Miguel Whitley (WR)
Derek Bennett (WR – strong finish last season)
Darren Coates (DL)
Darlin Davis (DL)
John Dillon (LB)

Are there any underrated players who deserve more attention?

Derek Bennett has done a phenomenal job, especially running track. He should qualify and has done a great job. Elijah Menville, if he was a little taller, he’d probably be ranked and have stars. He’s around 5’11 and a really good player.”

Which players are getting college interest or have potential to play at the next level?

Rickey Williams (WR)
Miguel Whitley (WR – gaining a lot of attention)
Jacoby Cash (DL – #56, tall defensive end)

What are your expectations for this team moving forward?

“We went 12-2 last year. Our goals are to win district and win state. Our division is very tough, but if you win our district, you’re in position to win state. I just expect us to play solid football every week.”

Why should people be paying attention to your program right now?

“Our body of work. In my three years, we went 7-5 and then 12-2, so there’s a lot of excitement about what we’ll do next.”

What would you want college coaches to know about your team?

“We’ve equipped our guys with the tools to handle college practices. Academically, we’re developing our players, and we’re going to put a good product on the field.”

How would you describe this team in one sentence?

“Unknown, because we don’t know yet. Who will the 2026 Purple Knights be?”

What is your coaching experience and how has it helped you?

“I’ve coached at 1A, 3A, and 5A levels, and at the college level at Grambling. All those experiences have helped build my toolbox. We play in one of the toughest districts in the state, so we focus on being polished and not beating ourselves.”
