Q & A with Head Coach Billy Mathis
What makes your program unique this season?
“The dedication of each and every one of these football players. We’ve been very successful since Brock started football, and each senior class wants to be the best that’s come through Brock. It’s that internal motivation these guys have to be the best Brock football team that makes this group so good.”
How would you describe your team’s identity this year?
“I’d describe them as hard-nosed and disciplined. That probably identifies them the most because we hang our hat on being a physical, disciplined football team.”
Who are some key players people should watch this season?
“Offensively we’ve got our quarterback Holt Frazier. At tight end we’ve got Davis Lee. On the offensive line we’ve got Waylon Winfrey, who also plays defensive tackle for us. Defensively, our middle linebacker Hayden Waller is a key guy.”
Are there any underrated players who deserve more attention?
“If there’s a guy that’s underrated, I’d say Waylon Winfrey. He’s 6’1”, 285 pounds. Colleges nowadays are looking for bigger guys, but he’s got a lot to prove to show he can play at that level.”
Which players are getting college interest or have potential to play at the next level?
“Davis Lee has offers from Nevada and Tarleton. Hayden Waller has a bunch—Bowling Green, Ohio, Tulane, Tulsa. Holt Frazier has been looked at by several schools. Waylon Winfrey is also getting looked at.”
What are your expectations for this team moving forward?
“We want to go win a state championship. But first, we want to win a district championship and take it one game at a time in the playoffs.”
What has been the biggest improvement from last season?
“The biggest improvement is our offensive line and defensive line.”
Why should people be paying attention to your program?
“Our kids do things the right way. They play hard, fast, and the way football should be played. Off the field, they’re involved in the community, feeding the homeless, helping during Thanksgiving and Christmas, mowing cemeteries, things like that. They do a lot of service, and that carries over into how they play.”
Holt Frazier (QB)
A proven leader under center, Frazier is coming off a season where he earned Offensive MVP honors in district play. With strong decision-making and command of the offense, he continues to draw attention from college programs.
Davis Lee (TE)
Lee is a versatile weapon who impacts both the passing and blocking game. With offers from Nevada and Tarleton, he has already shown he has the ability to compete at the next level
Waylon Winfrey (OL/DL)
Winfrey is a physical presence in the trenches at 6’1”, 285 pounds, contributing on both sides of the ball. Despite being considered undersized by some programs, his toughness and versatility make him a player that continues to prove himself.
Hayden Waller (LB)
A defensive leader and playmaker, Waller earned Defensive MVP honors in the district and has picked up multiple offers from programs such as Tulane, Tulsa, Ohio, and Bowling Green. His production and presence make him one of the top prospects on the team.
