School Spotlight – Rosepine High School, Rosepine, LA

Rosepine High School, a 2014 National Blue Ribbon recipient and the top-ranked school in Vernon Parish, continues to lock in its legacy as a powerhouse in both academics and athletics. Known as the Eagles, the school shares its pride in a trophy case filled with memorable achievements. A few of these include the 2022 football state championship, multiple individual state titles with a dominant wrestling program, and a boys’ basketball team’s first undefeated district title since 1991! This tradition of excellence has produced elite talent like Ethan Frey, a former LSU standout and 2024 Houston Astros draftee, proving that this top-rated institution is a birthing ground for professional-grade athletes and for top-tier scholars.

Q & A ft. Coach David Weldon

When did you start coaching football?

I started coaching football about 23 years ago, and every year since then has taught me something new—not just about the game, but about young men and how to help them grow.

What has been the biggest lesson you’ve learned while coaching?

The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that success isn’t always shown on the scoreboard. It’s about effort, discipline, and growth. This past season, going 1-9, could’ve broken a lot of teams—but our kids showed up every day, worked, and kept believing. That’s something you can build a program on.

What do you hope to achieve next season?

Next season, we’re focused on changing the standard. That means being more competitive every Friday night, playing disciplined football, and putting ourselves in position to win games. But more importantly, we want to build a team that expects to win because of the work they’ve put in.

Is there any room for improvement for you or your team?

Absolutely. It starts with me. I’ve got to be better as a coach—better prepared, better at putting our kids in the right positions, and better at developing talent. As a team, we need to improve in fundamentals, consistency, and mental toughness. The good thing is our kids have already shown they’re willing to put in the work.

Do you have any future goals for the school’s football program?

Our goal is to build a program, not just a team. We want to create a culture where hard work is the expectation, accountability is the standard, and success becomes consistent—on and off the field. We want to develop young men who represent our school and community the right way.

What has been the biggest challenge in your coaching career, and how have you or will you overcome it?

The biggest challenge has been turning around a struggling program and keeping kids motivated through adversity—especially after a tough season like 1-9. But the way we overcome that is by focusing on the process. We celebrate small wins, we emphasize effort, and we remind our players that growth doesn’t happen overnight. With the work these kids have already put in, I truly believe we’re heading in the right direction.
