We would like to welcome JB Newson to Gridiron, a 6’2, 160-pound WR/DB out of General Trass High School in Lake Providence, LA. Newson. Coming from the class of 2026 and carrying a 3.0 GPA, Newson is an elite two-way player who is quick to the ball when playing corner, has a great feel for the field, and is great at finding open space as a receiver. During his career, he caught 35 balls for 526 yards and nine touchdowns. That is 15 yards per reception, so he is known as a big playmaker. On defense, he had 71 total tackles with 55 of them solo, six interceptions, followed by 209 return yards, including a pick-six and 25 PBUs.
Here is my interview with JB Newson:
At what age did you start playing?
I pretty much have been playing my whole life. I took a little break my junior year.
Who have been some of the biggest influences in your life?
It would definetly be my uncle because he has supported we the whole way even with every sport that I have done. Wydett Williams is another one and one more person is my quarterback because he was a different type of worker.
How would you describe the football culture surrounding your high school and community?
To me, I feel like it’s everyone’s life. If you really care for the sport, you can do some amazing things.
What, in your opinion, makes Louisiana High School football different from any other state?
I just feel like nobody pop it off like we do. We bring that Louisiana culture on the field. We make the sport fun for everyone.
Do you have a core memory from when you first started playing as a little kid?
Just playing pee wee football. It was a lot of fun.
What do you like playing more, WR or DB?
When I first started playing, I liked DB more, but my senior year, I played a little less DB then I used to play so I played a lot more receiver, and it was a lot of fun. I usually play every single snap, every single game that I played.
What part or parts of your game do you feel like have improved the most over the years?
It’s for sure catching the ball. I just could not catch. I was always a guy that would try to take off before I caught the ball. My senior year, I stuggled a bit until I got out of my own head.
What were some of the toughest challenges you have faced over the years of playing?
There was a team we played where they just stopped everything we threw at them but they are a really good team so respect to them and I can’t complain.
Do you treat every game the same, or do you treat big games, rivalry games, and playoff games differently with a little more emotion?
For sure more emotion. To be honest, I am the type of player where the better the competition, the better I am. If the competition ain’t that good, I might slack off a little bit but I am doing my best to improve that.
How would you describe yourself as a leader to your teammates?
I am mostly a lead by example type player and person. The hard truth is that I am going to make sure to tell you the truth whether you did good or bad. If you do something wrong, I will help you correct it. You have to be able to take constructive critisim and learn from it.
What was the All-American Gridiron Bowl game experience like?
One of the best things I’ve ever did. I met a lot of people and amazing players, some with the same personalities as me and the same dreams. Players who love the game.
Is there a specific college or colleges you want to play for or even a specific coach you want to play for?
I would like to play for Colorado and Coach Prime. He just seems like the perfect person for me. I feel like he would really take his time and try to help me. I feel like everybody want to look out for somebody from a small town like me.
Do you play any other sports?
10th grade I played basketball and 11th grade I ran track.
If you could not play football, what other sport would be your career?
Basketball for sure. I probably have been playing basketball way longer than I have been playing football.
